Dear brothers and sisters,
in the reading from the Gospel of Luke, which we have just heard, is a leper who turns to Jesus "Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean" (5:12). He asks not simply to be healthy, but complete hearling in purity. Leprosy was considered a contamination of the whole person; a leper had to stay away from the people and from the temple. When he heard of Jesus, he is still in the city.
He believed wholeheartedly that Jesus could heal him. The leper shows us that during the encounter with the Lord, not many words are needed. It is important to trust in his omnipotence, his goodness and mercy. Jesus has compassion for the leper, stretches out his hand, touches him, and says: "I want it - be clean" ( Mk 1,41). The healed man is not to be made public, Christ does not support sensationalism in miracles. But the leper should show a priest and make the purification offering, to be reintegrated fully into the community of believers and social life. He is to witness the Messianic authority of Christ before the priest. The power of compassion with which Jesus heals the leper, strengthens the faith of this man and makes him a missionary.
A cordial greeting to all German-speaking pilgrims. The month of June is dedicated to the worship of the Sacred Heart. The awareness of compassion of Jesus with us, enkindles in us a new, joyful and missionary faith. God bless you all.
