(Rome) A month after his election to Pope, there is word that Jorge Mario Bergoglio has not yet pronounced the concept religious freedom. Vaticanista Sandro Magister warned about this. Pope Francis did not even use the word, despite the associated expectations, even in his speech on the 22nd of March before the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See with the envoys from around the world.
Once he talked about it, but without mentioning it by the name of religious freedom, and then on Saturday, the 6th April in his morning, improvised short sermon in the chapel of the Vatican guesthouse Domus Sanctae Martae where he lives.

He took a stand in his brief discussion on the side of the persecuted: “In order to meet a martyr you need not go into the Catacombs and the Colosseum: The martyrs are now living in many countries. Christians are persecuted for their faith, today, in the 21st Century, our church is a Church of martyrs. “
Then he identified with the early Christians, by quoting the words of Peter and John, "We can not but speak of what we have seen and heard" [Acts 4:20).

To them there were no ifs and butts to derive a statement: “The faith is not to be negotiated over.”
He continued: "In the history of God's people, there was always this temptation: omit part of the faith, perhaps not much. But the belief is, as we confess in the Creed. In fact, when we begin to cut away a piece of the faith, to negotiate the faith in order to sell it to the highest bidder, we enter the road of apostasy, unfaithfulness to the Lord.”
This is religious freedom for Pope Francis, especially, "have the courage to bear witness to the Risen Lord." An unabridged, public faith. A faith that claims to change society, and thus the world.
The “pretension" to change the world - criticism of theory of laicism of the "neutral" state
“The Pretension" is also the title of the book, published a few days ago the sociologist of religion Luca Diotallevi. Practice it started hard criticism of theories of laicism. Theories that are widely apparent even within the Church, appealing improperly to rely on the Second Vatican Council. It specifically concerns the denial of a direct and inseparable link between the Gospel and the social order, which is justified by an alleged "neutrality" of the state.
Diotallevi poses the paradigm of secularism against the paradigm of religious freedom, as it is typical done in the Anglo-Saxon world, but with a theological basis, based on De Civitate Dei of St. Augustine, and eventually to the New Testament.
Accordingly, the Saeculum between the first and second coming of Christ, an encounter between time and eternity, a conflict between sin and grace. This conflict is also attended by the prince, whether thrones or dominions, of which the New Testament speaks, and those who are considered to be the powers of this world. It's the rebel forces, on the cross and resurrection of Jesus who are to win the final victory. A victory that has not yet found its fulfillment. In Saeculum these powers still fluctuate between the extremes of anarchy and absolute rule, while the Church, as a guardian of victory is constantly trying to keep her away from the one and the other extreme.
Diotallevi and historical theology of Joseph Ratzinger
According to Augustine, the New Testament view of history has developed in our day, especially as developed by Oscar Cullmann and Joseph Ratzinger, the latter also in a theology of history, is quoted by Diotallevi in detail.
The really original part of the book, however, is that in which Diotallevi identifies with the celebration of the Eucharist as the source and summit of this “pretension" of the Christian faith to have a design for the social order. Here too the author is seen in continuity with Benedict XVI..
"The Eucharist is the Church visible. It is the victorious work of God breaking into history and it serves as a vision for the people. It is between the two thieves where the scourged Jesus is crucified, with the centurion who recognizes Him and the earth which trembles,” says Sandro Magister. The educated pagans of the first centuries were not wrong when they spoke of the celebration of the liturgy to describe Christianity.

Antarctic Researchers Construct and Venerate Wayside Cross With Crucifix and Image of Virgin Mary
The chief doctor of the research team, Vincenzo Di Giovanni explains in a letter, that two members of the expedition came by the idea for the erection of a wayside cross and that it was agreed upon by the others. From wood, they set up a box of wood panel with a small roof and put a Crucifix and Marian icon on the panel and between the two is the inscription "Protect Us".
The wayside cross was put up between the research station and the ice field, on which planes land. In the mean time, the Scientists have ceased calling the station Concordia among themselves, but after the Virgin and Mother of God Mary "Mother of the Eternal Glacier".
Last December 8th some colleagues of the research station formed a procession to the wayside cross, and prayed there on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception together. As Doctor Di Giovanni continued to write, that the wayside cross is also "respected by the Moslem scientist or the agnostic or atheist researchers."
"Here on the extreme end of the world we need God's assistance and want to fulfill his mandates", says Di Giovanni in his letter from the place, where the temperature goes 80 degrees celsius below zero. A place in which for six months during the Summer, the son never goes down and in the extreme polar night, an eternal darkness rules.
On the religious topography of Antarctica there is, besides the wayside cross of Our Dear Lady of the Glaciers, still another Christian place. Already since 1976 there is a Catholic Chapel of the Antarctic at the Argentine Research Station Esperanza (Hope) which is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. In 2003 the Patriarch of Moscow established on the island of South Shetland a Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.

In Ukraine Two of Three Applicants to Seminary Are Turned Away
(Lemberg/Lviv) Half of the applicants for entrance in the west Ukrainian seminary are turned away because of a shortage of places: In the Ukraine it is not the exception but the rule. Jaroslav Pryriz, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Sambir-Drohbytsch, explained in Konigstein at the international headquarters of the Pontifical Aid Agency, Kirche in Not [Church in Need], that for every seminary place in the Catholic part of Ukrain there are three applicants. In several parts of western Ukraine two out of three applicants are not accepted in the seminary, because the Bishops and the regents of the seminary don't know where they can accommodate the large number of young men in the seminary, who feel themselves called to the priesthood.
Since the collapse of Communism the number of applications has grown steadily. The Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church united to Rome have introduced strict standards for selection. Every applicant has to undergo four acceptance tests. Only the best will be taken, so long as there are places available, and they are much too few, says Auxiliary Bishop Pryiz.
Already in 2001 Kirche in Not published the documentary film Die Saat des Glaubens about the growth of the faith among Catholics in the Ukraine after the end of the Bolshevist dictatorship. The Greek-Catholics untied to Rome celebrate the Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite. They are concentrated in the western parts of Ukraine, which belonged up until the end of the First World War, to the Austrian Empire. Since 2011 the Senior Archbishop Syjatoslav Schwertschuk of Kiev and Halytsch is at the forefront of the Greek-Catholic Church of the Ukraine.
The relations to the Russian Orthodox Church is traditionally tense. The Catholic Ukrainians are considered by the Orthodox Church because of their union with Rome as apostate, although in the 16th century they did not join in complete union with the Moscow Patriarchate. During Communism, all Greek-Catholic churches were confiscated and -- as far as they remained churches -- were given to the Orthodox. Historically -- if also from other grounds -- there was also stress in the relationship between the Roman Catholic Poles and the Orthodox Russians. Through a common declaration of the Patriarch of Moscow Kyrill I and the Catholic Primate of Poland, Josef Michalik, an easing of tension was reached. The Greek Catholics of the Ukraine also hope and wish the same. Archbishop Schewtschuk explained on August 19th: "It would be my deepest wish, that something similar will also take place in Ukraine. I've already stated this many times. It would be very pleasing to us, if personal dialog on the level of our Churches could take place, so that the Patriarch of Moscow could recognize the UGCC as his dialog partner. Because till now, we are talked over to the Holy Father in the Vatican, and really it's always without us."

German Philosohper Weighs in About the Truth
The Old Liberal Offense about Offense
In Germany there is the notion that the saving flesh-and-blood Christendom can be reduced and reinterpreted to a contourless watered down Ideology.

This is what Frankfurt philosopher Walter Hoeres (83) said today in an editorial for the 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung' in the regional portion of "Rhein-Main'.
Hoeres recalled that in Germany since the Council and the Synod of Wurzburg, there has been an uninterrupted attempt to make the faith "understandable" to our times:
"Since then, everything is debated in the subject area of the Church, which in fact has come to indicate that everything can be put to question" -- the philosopher broke it down.
Thereupon it has to be the case that even in questions of faith, as with all expressions, "there must be an absolute correspondence of form and content".
The philosopher explained this expression: "That means that one has the task, to explain those things which have been found by all times to be offensive and foolishness, really to express this as the Church has always done".
Hoeres gives an example:
"How should you explain the truth that Jesus is true God and Man or that at the Sacrifice of the Mass according to Catholic conviction that the bread and wine is transformed into the body and blood of Christ, without bringing a non-believer to offense?"
