Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò: The liturgical question is of great importance because the ordinance summarizes the doctrine, morality, spirituality, and discipline of the ecclesial body that performs it. Just as the Catholic Mass is a perfect and coherent expression of the Catholic Magisterium, the Reformed liturgy is an expression of the conciliar deviations, indeed it reveals and confirms, without the ambiguities and ramblings of the texts of Vatican II, its heterodox nature. One could say, to use a parable, that the healthy blood of the Gospel flows in the veins of the Tridentine Mass, while in the veins of the New Rite flows the polluted blood of heresy and the spirit of the world.

(Rome) Cardinal Robert Sarah has made a public statement on the time of Corona. Previously, he had signed the call Veritas liberabit vos, but then withdrew his signature. At the same time, there were voices that his removal as Prefect of the Roman Congregation for Worship was imminent. Is there a connection?

Cardinal Sarah, one of nine Cardinal Prefects at the Roman Curia, is considered an "exotic" in the government of Pope Francis. This is not due to his origin from the African Gold Coast, but in his understanding of the Church, since he is much closer to that of Benedict XVI.

His dismissal and removal from the Vatican has therefore been expected for some time, as Cardinal Gerhard Müller, another signatory of the call, did in 2017. Francis has publicly rebuked Cardinal Sarah in the past for taking steps that run counter to the papal agenda. So far, there have been two particularly glaring cases. Once in 2016/17 because of Sarah's invitation to all priests to return to the celebration ad orientem. There was a great deal of outrage in progressive circles, which were particularly close to the Pope. A debate on this was categorically rejected. Francis intervened personally by reassuring his entourage and declaring Sarah's advance null and void. The cardinal himself did not move away from his position, but was isolated from Santa Marta within his own dicastery and has no direct influence on the leadership of the universal Church.

The latest edition of the magazine of the Latin Mass Society of England & Wales, Mass of Ages, contains a review by Kevin Symonds of Taylor Marshall’s book Infiltration: The Plot to Destroy the Church from Within. (The review as published may be viewed in a PDF of the magazine, starting at page 40, as well as on the author’s personal website; it has been reproduced in full here.) 

Pursuing hints in the book, Symonds goes much beyond the conclusions of Marshall regarding Bugnini, having uncovered new material on Bugnini that decisively moves the question of his association with Freemasonry from the realm of shadowy speculation, where it remained even as recently as the scholarly biography by Yves Chiron, to the level of a highly likely hypothesis. Instead of “unnamed sources,” where the matter was left by Michael Davies, we finally have named sources, with a plausible paper trail.

In this book, Taylor Marshall firmly maintains that the Catholic Church has been literally infiltrated by her enemies, thereby experiencing a massive campaign of disruption and distortion. A particular area in which Marshall advances this thesis pertains to the influence of the Vincentian priest, and later Archbishop, Annibale Bugnini (1912-1982) in the liturgical reforms of the mid-twentieth century. This review focuses on Marshall’s presentation of Bugnini’s influence upon these reforms and in particular of Marshall’s claim that Bugnini was involved with Freemasonry. It will be argued that, despite his eagerness to find evidence of ‘infiltration’ and his animus against Bugnini, Marshall actually misses some important evidence in favor of Bugnini’s membership of the Italian Freemasons.

Piero Marini Appointed as New President of Liturgy Commission for Eastern Churches

(Rome) Pope Francis renewed the composition of the Special Commission for the Liturgy of the Congregation for Eastern Churches. The new President  he has appointed is Archbishop Curia Piero Marini, the former master of ceremonies of Pope John Paul II.

Msgr. Piero Marini was not confirmed in this post by Pope Benedict XVI.. He was replaced by Msgr. Guido Marini, who in spite of the concurrence of the same name, has a different liturgical sensibility. Piero Marini is a student of Curial Archbishop, Annibale Bugnini, the creator of radical liturgical reform of 1969. Guido Marini, however, is a disciple of Cardinal Giuseppe Siri, archbishop of Genoa, whom Pope Pius XII. had considered his "natural" successor.

Archbishop Piero Marini, who had customized unusual, colorful vestment creations for John Paul II.,  repeatedly expressed himself disparaging over the attempts and efforts to recover the sacredness of the sacred liturgy by the German Pope. Instead of new acquisitions, the German Pope took advantage of the pre-conciliar vestments of his predecessors, to also be a signal of continuity in the Church also about the Council  (St. Francis of Assisi Instead of Annibale Bugnini -. Benedict XVI Exhorts Bishops to Respect Liturgy).

About the choice of Francis as Pope Piero Marini commented, saying that now the "stuffy air" at the Vatican has come to an end and you could "again breathe fresh air"  (Ex Master of Ceremonies Piero Marini: Under Francis "breathes fresh air after marshy, stuffy air "). Msgr. Piero Marini is one of the prelates, who has an advocated an opening towards  homosexuals  (three cardinals, two archbishops and Vatican Spokesman for Compromise with Homosexuals? - What Does Pope Francis Do? ).

So far, the liturgy of the Eastern Church has been untouched by  the liturgical reform of the Vinentian Annibale Bugnini.  That could change now. Curial Archbishop Piero Marini is proud of his heritage as a Bugnini student. The Maronite rite could  be especially affected by corresponding changes.

(Rome) Pope Francis today confirmed Curia Archbishop Piero Marini in his position as  President of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses.  Msgr. Marini was from 1987-2007 papal master of ceremonies. In 1998  Pope John Paul II. appointed him the Titular Bishop of Martirano, In 2003 Titular Archbishop of Martirano.In  2007 he was replaced by the new Pope Benedict XVI.  with Msgr. Guido Marini as master of ceremonies and  Piero Marini was appointed  the head of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses.

New members of the Pontifical Committee appointed by Pope Francis were Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, President of the Council for Laity, Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship, Cardinal Beniamino Stella, Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy , and Father Juan Javier Flores Arcas OSB, Rector of the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant'Anselmo in Rome ,

Piero Marini was discussed over two years for other offices

Curial Archbishop Piero Marini had been, since the election of Pope Francis, because of his liturgical sensibility persistently discussed to again become papal master of ceremonies or the successor Cardinal Antonio Canizares as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship. This was because, among other things, that  the Pope neither confirmed Piero Marini  in his previous office, nor Cardinal Canizares in his. There was considerable resistance against the appointment of Piero Marini in  one of the two offices.

A few days before the start of the Synod of Bishops in the fall of 2014  Francis appointed Cardinal Canizares as the new Archbishop of Valencia, and on 26 November appointed Cardinal Robert Sarah as his successor at the head of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Now the confirmation of Piero Marini follows on his previous term of office.

Piero Marini's Participation as Secretary of Annibale Bugnini on Liturgical Reform of 1969

Piero Marini was ordained a priest on June 27, 1965 and subsequently served as secretary of Msgr. Annibale Bugnini, the "architect"  of the post-conciliar liturgical reform. The solemn Mass at Marin's ordination took place, as the picture shows, concelebrating according to the new 1965 Missal.

On February 22, 1965, two weeks before Pope Paul VI., in the course of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council would first celebrate the Mass according to the new Missal of 1965 in Ognissanti, he promoted Curial Archbishop Enrico Dante, the papal   to cardinal. Msgr. Dante had been in the Office of Ceremonies since 1914 and  since 1947,  Papal Master of Ceremonies. With the elevation to Cardinal he was automatically exempted from office.

Paul VI. apparently appointed instead, with a view to the introduction of the new 1965 Missal, the Lazarist Priest, Annibale Bugnini ad interim, as acting master of ceremonies. On March 7, 1965, the pope celebrated the liturgy of the word in the vernacular, facing the people for the first time under the new 1965 Missal. 

Bugnini had been secretary of the Consilium ad exsequendam constitutionem de Sacra Liturgia that Paul VI. created in 1964 on the implementation of the liturgical reform, which   the Council had defined in the Constitution on the Liturgy,  Sacrosanctum Concilium. It was an office which he held until 1970, until the Missal of 1969 when a radical liturgical reform was implemented, which went far beyond the desired for reform of the Council.

The new priest, Piero Marini was Bugnini's personal secretary  and worked in the Consilium ad exsequendam constitutionem de Sacra Liturgia  in 1965. He played a leading role in the Bugninine liturgical reform of 1969. With Bugnini's  departure from office of papal ceremonies, Marini entered the office, which he took over in 1987. Msgr. Piero Marini acquired a doctorate in liturgical sciences in 1970 at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm  in 1981 at the LUISS University in Rome, another in political science.

Bugnini Man Appointed to Congregation of Divine Worship -- 4 More Ratzingerians Dismissed

(Vatican) Pope Francis continues to purge the liturgical sensibility of his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

On 5 November it was announced in the daily bulletin of the Holy See that Pope Francis had appointed a new Under-Secretary for the Congregation for Divine Worship. What was not there is that the two other undersecretaries were also dismissed. The Congregation has had no Cardinal Prefect since the beginning of October, after Pope Francis sent back the previous head of the dicastery, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares   as archbishop of Valencia in Spain. Now the number two of the Congregation has been exchanged and thus within a month, the entire leadership.

Previous  Undersecretaries Have Learned of their Ouster from the Bulletin

The previous Undersecretaries, the Marist Father Anthony Ward and Msgr. Juan Miguel Ferrer-Grenesche had learned from   the publication of the bulletin that they were not re-elected. The dismissal was not preceded by a conversation with the Pope, nor they were previously informed in other ways about it.  Msgr. Ferrer is a priest of the Archdiocese of Toledo, whose Vicar he was. Cardinal Cañizares, the former Archbishop of Toledo, brought him to Rome in 2009.

Msgr. Ferrer is an acknowledged expert in the Mozarabic rite, those Visigothic rite, which was celebrated in Spain before the introduction of the Roman rite and which has been preserved during the Spanish rule in underground and still maintained in some places,  including Toledo and Salamanca. Msgr. Ferrer  is distinguished by a special liturgical sensibility and a close relationship to the Old Rite.

New Undersecretary a "Staunch Bugninist"

The bulletin from Wednesday announced the appointment of the new undersecretary, Monfortian Father Corrado Maggioni. As Pope Francis seems to be the liturgical antipode to Pope Benedict XVI., the same for Father Maggioni seems similarly in comparison to his recently deposed predecessors. 

The Montfortian is a "confident Bugninist" as Riposte Catholic  reports and a "great friend of Msgr. Piero Marini", the papal master of ceremonies of John Paul II. Annibale Bugnini (1912-1982) was largely responsible for the development and implementation of the liturgical reform of 1969/1970.

At the beginning of his pontificate, Francis dismissed all of Benedict XVI's liturgically related consultants in the Office of papal ceremonies. From the staff of Benedict XVI.  who performed ceremonies according to the "reform of the reform", only the papal master of ceremonies, Msgr. Guido Marini is left. One of the members appointed by Pope Francis  as a consultant was Father Maggioni.

Four Ratzingerians Dismissed in One Month

With Msgr. Miguel Ferrer falling within a few days, another head of the Ratzingerian Vatican has fallen, already replaced by  Pope Francis on October 8, Msgr. Celso Morga Iruzubieta as secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy and Msgr. Alberto Gonzalez Chaves as office manager of the Congregation for Bishops. Taking into account Cardinal Cañizares as the highest-ranking dismissed figure, four senior Ratzingerians were removed last month. Including the full leadership of the Congregation for the Clergy and the Congregation for Divine Worship,  the staff in those two congregations most clearly showed the signature of Benedict XVI.

New York Times OP-ED: Bugnini as the Architect of Liturgical Modernism

WALKING into church 40 years ago on this first Sunday of Advent, many Roman Catholics might have wondered where they were. The priest not only spoke English rather than Latin, but he faced the congregation instead of the tabernacle; laymen took on duties previously reserved for priests; folk music filled the air. The great changes of Vatican II had hit home.

All this was a radical break from the traditional Latin Mass, codified in the 16th century at the Council of Trent. For centuries, that Mass served as a structured sacrifice with directives, called “rubrics,” that were not optional. This is how it is done, said the book. As recently as 1947, Pope Pius XII had issued an encyclical on liturgy that scoffed at modernization; he said that the idea of changes to the traditional Latin Mass “pained” him “grievously.”
