Cardinal Thorne Accused of Sex Abuse

Edit: Thorne has been under fire since 2013 when he attempted to defend an accused Bishop Gabino Miranda Melgarjo. The Vatican considered the case closed. Cardinal Thorne considers this part of a Vatican effort to discredit him.

[Seattle TimesVATICAN CITY (AP) — The once-powerful archbishop of Lima, Peru and the first-ever cardinal of Opus Dei acknowledged Saturday that the Vatican had imposed sanctions on him in 2019 following an allegation of sexual abuse, but he strongly denied any wrongdoing.

Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, 81, penned a letter of response after Spain’s El País newspaper detailed the allegations against him in its latest installment of exposing cases of clergy sexual abuse in the Spanish-speaking Catholic Church. Cipriani called the allegations “completely false.”

“I haven’t committed any crime, nor have I sexually abused anyone in 1983, neither before nor after,” Cipriani said in the letter provided by Opus Dei’s Rome office.

EF Tancred has no wit, so he resorts to censorship. The truth it cuts and makes him bleed, so EF Tancred does not read. Tancred, will you not reply, and sing the Donald’s lullaby? Or put on your false piety. The best you’ll get is spam from me. On and on the same reminder: your blog is trash, a dumpster fire. Delete, and batten down the hatch! For on its way, another batch.

Mr. Tancred, sorry to bother you, sir. I’m sure you’re very busy. I follow your blog as my number one Catholic news source. I’ve taken a notice that you’re a good Christian man, and like all good Christian men, you have a healthy respect for our returning President, Donald Trump. The reason I’m writing is to report a miracle. I was staying at the Trump hotel, when at breakfast, I was served French toast. But this was no ordinary toast. In the marbled cinnamon, I could make out the spitting image of Henry VIII in perfect detail. Can you believe it? Now a little background on me, I used to go to the SSPX, because I love the aesthetic of Tradition, but the priest was very rigid there. He wouldn’t allow me in the church wearing my choicest low-cut tops. Long story short, I found a parish where the priest even lets me be a Eucharistic Minister. Father says my breasts are a gift from God, and I would show ingratitude by covering up. He’s a sweet man, much more so than my ex husband (annulled). Anyway, I much prefer the old Mass, and I’m hoping Trump can veto Traditionis Custodes to make it possible to attend again. I could easily give up being a Eucharistic Minister for that. To me, that French toast was a miracle and a prophecy greater than Fatima. Toodles!

This stink gives the Pope yet another strong incentive to shut Opus Dei down for good. They are corrupt and do nothing for the Church but to add grief.

Sorry again for the spiteful things I wrote about you personally, Tancred. I do not retract the statements and implications that you are more than a little Trump enthused. But seeing how you behave, I can’t rule out that your view lies somewhere between blindness and bait. Not posting my comments was the best approach to take when all else short of humanity failed, and I can’t seriously knock you for that. You’re stubborner than I am, and I mean that as a compliment, because it shows you have perseverance (albeit, unrefined, as is mine). It’s sunk in again, days later than it should have, that it’s just not worth it commenting in a shit hole like this. I don’t expect anything to change at the Eponymous Flower, nor should I. I have no interest in starting my own blog. I only comment here because inhibitions drop online and triggers are plentiful (you invite vitriol in how you conduct yourself and this forum, plain and simple). The internet is a broken place for community and communication. This is the last website I’ve sought to detach from as a commenter, and I can gladly say you’ve helped me do so, which is probably a relief to us both.

P.S. Bishop Williamson helped me along my journey as a Catholic and I’m thankful to him for that. He is also immensely charming, and despite my disagreement with his stance on the crisis, the Catholic world will suffer a great loss not having him here.
