"Paddy" is a term used to describe Irish people, as in "Paddy wagon", because so many were policemen in urban areas like Boston. You've never heard the term??
Of course I've heard the Irish being described as "paddies". I've also heard the term "no Irish need apply". Why is it okay to use "racist" words to describe the Irish but using the "n" word is a hate crime?
Liam, thanks for the correction. I like that much better, speaking as one with significant Irish heritage. I know it's not as Noble as the lofty African pedigree, but I like it.

Actually, it’s because so many were given rides in such modes of conveyance. The term predates their recruitment into law enforcement.
