I think that the meltdown started when he poked a stick at the D.C. diocese a few months ago and was forced to apologize to Gregory. (My guess is that the reply was "apology not accepted".) That would throw him off of his game.
With all of the chest thumping revelations about Rossi, Rossi is still in charge of the Basilica.
He reached too high with D.C. bunch. They have the money and influence to play big league ball. He does not.
Maybe the DC diocese threatened to reveal something?
