Italian Cardinal Says That if Catholics Don’t Like Francis, They Can Become Protestant

'There are too many people talking about the Pope,' said Cardinal Bassetti, President of the Italian Bishops' Conference, when he met media representatives.

Edit: I’d have thought approving of this Pope was something Protestants were likely to do. Would Protestants welcome traditionalist Catholics like they welcome unrepentant sodomites?

"If someone does not like the Pope, he should be allowed to say it because he can go other ways," said Gualtiero Cardinal Bassetti, President of the Italian Bishops' Conference, during a meeting with media representatives in Perugia on January 25.

"There are too many people talking about the Pope," Bassetti said of the growing discontent with Pope Francis among Catholics.  He told someone to go to the Protestants if he didn't like the Catholic Church.  They would have neither a pope nor a bishop.  Everyone can make their own decisions.”  "Enough complaining.  It doesn't help anyway,” he said.

Cardinal Bassetti (77) is Archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve (Italy).  Pope Francis made him cardinal in 2014.  He has been the President of the Italian Episcopal Conference since 2017.

It is not clear who Bassetti (archive photo) specifically meant by his outburst described by Italian media.  Il Messaggero suspected that the displeasure of many Italians with Pope Francis' stance on immigration could have triggered the cardinal's acrimony.  At the media meeting, Bassetti presented the program for the Mediterranean initiative "Mediterranean: Border of Peace" organized by the Italian Episcopal Conference, which will take place in Bari from September 19 to 23

  3. Why would I choose to become a Protestant like Jorge Bergoglio? It make no sense at all.

  4. I am every time amazed that we see smiley faced airheads fawming over a Pope. Its not so much for the things he says but for the fantasy caricature fairytale prince he is immagined in dreams. And to think that so many leople from 3rd world countries are the most gullible. From their earliest years they have never come to see the real person, but his person in rose-colored spectacles. Because they have been taught an unconditional deference to authority and university titles. They love the West, but don't know what it is.Never have they read Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, or if they have, then just regurgitated the superficial. But Francis hates their moral values and would pervert them if he could.

  7. The Pope is a servant of the dogmas, doctrines and disciplines of the Catholic faith if he and his supporters don't want those duties and obligations they should repent or resign.

  8. I would think that the good Cardinal would have no objections if we attend the mass offered by the Priests of the SSPX then either......

  9. Why don't you contact him and find out. Please let the reader know the outcome.
I imagine that the Cardinal would be most interested in trying to persuade those who have opted out of the mainstream Catholic Church to accept the full body of its teaching, including all of Vatican II, so that they can legitimately call themselves Catholic.

  10. I think you would find it's the cardinal has the problem of accepting the full body of the Catholic Churches teaching... especially that before the second vatican council. Why don't you call him and see what he thinks of Quo Primum and Mortalium Animos. You let the reader know what you found out.

  15. The Cardinal may well suggest that Quo Primum, Mortalium Animos are, like some other papal documents, effectively no longer reflective of authentic Catholic teaching and that they inadequately express the Catholic Church's understanding of reality.

Vatican II and the body of its post conciliar interpretation form the basis for that understanding. The schismatic Lefebvre and his deluded followers do not share in that vision of God's Kingdom but are always welcome back after they accept the Magisterial teachings of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council and their validation by not only the 3000 bishops of the Council but every Pope since.
