Rome (kath.net) Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of the Archbishop of Washington DC, Cardinal Donald Wuerl. This was announced by the Vatican. The 78-year-old was widely criticized for covering up abuse cases and cover-up allegations for weeks.
The Cardinal is one of the leading exponents for progressive causes in the world Church. We’d expect that the media will try to paint him as a conservative.
Of course, this also makes ViganĂ²’s accusations look more credible. As CNS writes:
Now, Francis and Wuerl face a common denouncer in Archbishop ViganĂ². Some in Rome speculate that any move by Francis to replace or sideline Wuerl might have to be shelved, lest it look like a tacit concession to ViganĂ²’s accusations. For the most part, Wuerl has been clear he does not intend to stand down, and that he wants to play an active part in the upcoming general session of the U.S. bishops’ conference in November, which is expected to deal almost exclusively with the fallout of the recent sexual abuse scandals.

But he us still a Cardinal. How is that? Incredible! O Mary Immaculate, Patroness of the Americas, crush the Head of Satan.
ReplyDeleteAMEN! He should 1) not be a Cardinal and 2) totally resign I.e. NOT be an Apostolic Administrator.
Delete@Paul Haley: Good question. He can still vote for a new pope.
ReplyDeleteTill he turns 80.
Delete80? Who says? Canon Law? Conclave rules? They can and will break them if they find them inconvenient.

DeleteCanon law and conclave rules.
Mahony resigned in disgrace not unlike O’Brien of Scotland, who decided not to participate in the conclave, but the Raj not only voted, but gloated after B16 resigned and Bergoglio was elected.
Well....I guess the Church scandal/crisis has been taken care of and now we can all relax and get back to business.
ReplyDeleteNow Vignano looks more credible than ever.
DeleteWill his position now be given to a Catholic?
ReplyDeleteas usual, Barnhardt gets this whole shellgame right; this is a promotion for Donna....

I think she’s unreadable.
ReplyDeleteThe College of Cardinals should be abolished. It's function as a papal electoral body could be taken over by an international body made up as need arises by the presidents of national episcopal conferences plus a representative 'Sensus Fideilun' group of religious and laity.
ReplyDeleteAnd it would, no doubt include chattering lesbian journos and Unitarian sci-fi authors.
DeleteI think you could be onto something there. Discard the cardinals and create a new, fresh and vibrantly aspirational group of electors. But this new body must be made up solely of 16-25 year olds and be 75% female, 20% male and 10% biscuit (Spadaro is the overseer).
DeleteTo quote what may be Francis's favorite palindrome - Are we not drawn onward to new era?
Failing that, restrict papal electors to prelates who not only know what the Memorare is but can also recite it.
