The crisis is mainly one of credibility and moral authority. It is only recent years that exemptions have been give to bishops in civil jurisdictions that have mandatory reporting.
The Catholic Church has been prepared and, in most parts of the world, continues to place the institution of the priesthood and the 'honor' of the Church above the human dignity of children. The systemic institutional coverups is even worse than the catalogue of the instances of terrible abuse.
Every Catholic of whatever viewpoint needs to understand that this is at the heart of the Church's inner spiritual corruption.
