Bishop Hails Martin Luther as “Mystic of Grace”
In realty Luther was a drunkard, who called the Mass “the greatest and most terrible abomination” of all “papal idolatries” (Schmalkald Articles).
He said things like:
“Christ committed adultery first of all with the women at the well about whom St John tell’s us. Was not everybody about Him saying: ‘Whatever has He been doing with her?’ Secondly, with Mary Magdalen, and thirdly with the women taken in adultery whom He dismissed so lightly. Thus even, Christ who was so righteous, must have been guilty of fornication before He died.” (Tischreden, Weimarer Edition, Vol. 2, p. 107).
Or: “I have greater confidence in my wife and my pupils than I have in Christ” (Tischreden, 2397b).
Or: “It is not in opposition to the Holy Scriptures for a man to have several wives.” (De Wette, Vol. 2, p. 459).

DeleteRead Warren Carroll's The Cleaving of Christendom to get a true take on the apostate luther who started a civil war that left a quarter million dead. He broke his vows and committed schism. He wrote for other to 'wash their hands in the blood of bishops' and hated the pope and wrote much against him, the Catholic Church and the sacramental life.
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree with Bishop Robbie B. that Luther needs to be reassessed. It is simply not accurate to describe him as the most foul-mouthed, prideful, blasphemous and diabolically-disorientated heresiarch in the history of Christendom. No. For the complete man to be evinced, you have to add über-constipated to the descriptive list.

The Catholic Church in my younger years didn't say "Reformation" they more appropriately called it REVOLUTION. Luther referred to Jewish scholarship as "p*ss and s*!t". For me... p!*$ on his memory.

ReplyDeleteA sensible conclusion would be that if the hierarchy of the Catholic Church had the courage, detachment, openness and commitment to the Augustinian principle of 'Ecclesia semper refomanda' and simply addressed Luther's original complaints, then the whole protestant reformation would have been avoided.
The Protestant Reformation would be the reformation of Protestantism, no?

DeleteAnd I would think St. Augustine's phrase refers to the *members* of the Church always having to reform in order to conform more and more to Christ, rather than to the *institutional* Church reshaping this bit of doctrine here or changing that teaching there in order to conform more and more to the world.
Study the Council of Trent and see if it dismissed the seriousness of Luther's call for reform and later protestant claims.
DeleteYou will discover, if you look at the documentation, that Trent was prepared to take very seriously the calls for the vernacular Mass, Communion under both kinds for the laity and optional clerical celibacy among other things.

DeleteTrent actually condemned, in magisterial infallibility, all the"reforms" the sleezy provocateur calling himself "Jim P" says the Council "was prepared to take seriously." He, of course, does not believe this outrageous lie but his purpose is not truth but the provocation of the Faithful. For the information of all who contribute (as I did until recently) to the academically very splendid Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California: Bishop Barron is their regional episcopal vicar and is often on campus, equating great Catholics like Pascal and John Henry Newman to Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar in addresses to the student body---hence, poisoning with false examples and parallels the minds of the young Catholics sent there by their parents trusting the college remains one of the few truly orthodox Catholic colleges in the nation. If you doubt my words, read in the college's 2016 quarterly newsletters about the frequent visits to the campus by this wolf in shepherd's clothing, especially the Fall 2016 issue where he offers the typical modernist mix of sound-sounding Catholic pieties and theological insights spiced with Modernist heresy. I have made Dr. McLean, the college president, and other college authorities aware of this wolf in their midst, but it should be well known by them that Barron adheres to the Hans Urs Von Balthasar "hope" that Hell may be empty (contrary to church teaching and the approved apparition of Fatima), assures a gay "married" journalist that he would not move a finger against gay "marriage," and mentions the arch-heretic Teihard de Chardin in his series "Catholicism" as one of the great theological influences of 20th century Catholicism. All this by his own mouth. Barron is the drop of venom in the delightful mead.
