Robber Barron Praises Demonic Luther

Bishop Hails Martin Luther as “Mystic of Grace”

Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Robert Barron writes on aleteia.org, that Alec Ryrie's book “Protestants” caused him to look differently at Martin Luther, “for at the core of Luther’s life and theology was an overwhelming experience of grace". He calls Luther’s “religious movement” a “love affair”. And, “Luther was a mystic of grace, someone who had fallen completely in love.”

In realty Luther was a drunkard, who called the Mass “the greatest and most terrible abomination” of all “papal idolatries” (Schmalkald Articles).

He said things like:

“Christ committed adultery first of all with the women at the well about whom St John tell’s us. Was not everybody about Him saying: ‘Whatever has He been doing with her?’ Secondly, with Mary Magdalen, and thirdly with the women taken in adultery whom He dismissed so lightly. Thus even, Christ who was so righteous, must have been guilty of fornication before He died.” (Tischreden, Weimarer Edition, Vol. 2, p. 107).

Or: “I have greater confidence in my wife and my pupils than I have in Christ” (Tischreden, 2397b).

Or: “It is not in opposition to the Holy Scriptures for a man to have several wives.” (De Wette, Vol. 2, p. 459).

  1. This guy is hailed as the bastion of orthodoxy in Novus Ordo land. Yet another reason to leave the conciliar church.

I was married in the Lutheran church which now accepts abortion and gay marriage as normal.

  3. Robert Barron is a joke. Just another cog in the propaganda machine of the Catholic In Crowd.

  4. Good for Bp. Barron... You need to focus on the nasty little prick in SF who hoses the homeless. I knew that this sleazy thug was a lowlife when he used his mother's testimony to weasel out of a drunken driving rap.

  5. Read Warren Carroll's The Cleaving of Christendom to get a true take on the apostate luther who started a civil war that left a quarter million dead. He broke his vows and committed schism. He wrote for other to 'wash their hands in the blood of bishops' and hated the pope and wrote much against him, the Catholic Church and the sacramental life.

  6. I tend to agree with Bishop Robbie B. that Luther needs to be reassessed. It is simply not accurate to describe him as the most foul-mouthed, prideful, blasphemous and diabolically-disorientated heresiarch in the history of Christendom. No. For the complete man to be evinced, you have to add über-constipated to the descriptive list.

    3. Luther was a drunken lardass. His brutality toward the Jews pales in comparison to his brutality toward the peasantry. The Catholic Church in my younger years didn't say "Reformation" they more appropriately called it REVOLUTION. Luther referred to Jewish scholarship as "p*ss and s*!t". For me... p!*$ on his memory.

  7. The name Alec Ryrie is all I needed to read. Mr. Ryrie's talent for revising history is quite spectacular.

  8. Another litany of turgid ad hominem, ad baculua from the lazy minded and unthinking.
A sensible conclusion would be that if the hierarchy of the Catholic Church had the courage, detachment, openness and commitment to the Augustinian principle of 'Ecclesia semper refomanda' and simply addressed Luther's original complaints, then the whole protestant reformation would have been avoided.

    1. The Protestant Reformation would be the reformation of Protestantism, no?

    3. Oh, c'mon Jim P, y'auld grouch. If you can't kickstart your day with an ad hominem against Luther, then what's the fugly point of blogging at all?

And I would think St. Augustine's phrase refers to the *members* of the Church always having to reform in order to conform more and more to Christ, rather than to the *institutional* Church reshaping this bit of doctrine here or changing that teaching there in order to conform more and more to the world.

    4. Study the Council of Trent and see if it dismissed the seriousness of Luther's call for reform and later protestant claims.
You will discover, if you look at the documentation, that Trent was prepared to take very seriously the calls for the vernacular Mass, Communion under both kinds for the laity and optional clerical celibacy among other things.
Ignorance is bliss but it is ultimately just another form of narcissism and false security.

    5. Yes, blame Luther's lechery and warped "faith" on the Church and the popes, you moronic liar.

    6. Trent actually condemned, in magisterial infallibility, all the"reforms" the sleezy provocateur calling himself "Jim P" says the Council "was prepared to take seriously." He, of course, does not believe this outrageous lie but his purpose is not truth but the provocation of the Faithful. This reply, therefore, is not for him (as of now a soul in throes of the Devil) but for well-meaning Catholics who read this blog, simply for their clarification. Don't believe the provocateur passing himself off as a scholar---he obeys his father, The Father of Lies.

    8. The only knee-jerk inanities around here are your distortions of history, spewed with diabolical malice. God have mercy on your twisted soul. And, yes, many of us know the real teachings of Trent---not your distortions. Lucy S.

  9. Luther/Lutheranism is what the Catholic Church has up until the last 50 years always taught that it is....he was a heretic, his ideas were heresy, and Lutheranism is heresy. Period.

  10. For the information of all who contribute (as I did until recently) to the academically very splendid Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California: Bishop Barron is their regional episcopal vicar and is often on campus, equating great Catholics like Pascal and John Henry Newman to Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar in addresses to the student body---hence, poisoning with false examples and parallels the minds of the young Catholics sent there by their parents trusting the college remains one of the few truly orthodox Catholic colleges in the nation. If you doubt my words, read in the college's 2016 quarterly newsletters about the frequent visits to the campus by this wolf in shepherd's clothing, especially the Fall 2016 issue where he offers the typical modernist mix of sound-sounding Catholic pieties and theological insights spiced with Modernist heresy. I have made Dr. McLean, the college president, and other college authorities aware of this wolf in their midst, but it should be well known by them that Barron adheres to the Hans Urs Von Balthasar "hope" that Hell may be empty (contrary to church teaching and the approved apparition of Fatima), assures a gay "married" journalist that he would not move a finger against gay "marriage," and mentions the arch-heretic Teihard de Chardin in his series "Catholicism" as one of the great theological influences of 20th century Catholicism. All this by his own mouth. Barron is the drop of venom in the delightful mead.

    1. One wonders to whom is Anonymous (June 21, 2107 at 3:00 AM) referring to? The entry is not clear. I suspect it is the same provocateur that goes by "Jim P" above. He is an ignoramus posing as a scholar of the Council of Trent. Reptilian indeed. If, on the other hand, the reference is to Bishop Barron, I must admit the term "narcissist" could not have a more just application.
