"If he had remained pope, he would not have lived long."
Focus Magazine , No. 26, June 24, 2017, Archbishop Georg Gänswein on Benedict XVI, who was "deeply exhausted" after an eight-year pontificate. Four years and four months have passed since his resignation from office.

This isn't the place for you to peddle snake oil.
Trust the ski instructor Ganswein about as far as I can throw him.
This is a Catholic blog did it come to your mind to pray for your husband's cure or did just the snake oil work?
Despite his surname, I'm guessing "Dr.Williams" works from a dingy office not in Llanelli but in downtown Lagos.
The true story will never be known but versions given are poppycock. Benedict had versions of the Third Secret which changed with time to a more liberal interpretation.
Is Archbishop Gänswein being unintentionally ironic? Does he not know that the 2,000 year old convention is that popes *do* die in office? Whether dying naturally due to the rigours of being the Vicar of Christ or perhaps unnaturally at the hands of "the wolves" (is this what we're meant to think the archbishop is hinting at?), Benedict XVI would only have been faithfully following in his predecessors' footsteps.
But... I recall seeing Pope Benedict officiate the Christmas midnight Mass in 2012. He looked frail and tired to the extent that my heart went out to him. I forget who the commentator was who said that Pope Benedict became exhausted during public events where his predecessor, St. Pope John Paul I was energized. For me, I'm pleased that he Pope Emeritus is thriving.
^^^^^ Meant to say John Paul 2, not 1.
He should have died in office (officially). He will go down as the worst pope in history.
Where, either in Sacred Scripture or Tradition is it required for a Pope to die in office?
What an idiotic thing for Ganswein to say.
He should have stayed in office, and died on the Throne of Saint Peter, just as all the rest had done (except Celestine). Had Benedict XVI dies, we would have had a Catholic Pope, perhaps not as great liturgically as Benedict, but certainly not the heretic we have now in Francis.
I don't believe Benedict XVI resigned because of exhaustion, I think it was a behind the scenes coup to force him out. Just as the radicals are attacking Trump no matter what he does, the radicals attacked Benedict XVI no matter what he did. He couldn't put thru his whole program. There were a lot of things he was going to return, but couldn't because of liberal opposition. He was going to make the Cure of Ars (Saint John Vianney) the patron of all priests. The liberals hated that "pre-Vatican II" example. Benedict was going to bring back the papal tiara (I read....could be gossip though), because it was a powerful symbol. And the Sedia, for the same reason. But both were a no-go with the liberals.
I too, would trust Gaswein as far as I could throw my house.
The only good thing, is that Francis is old. Hopefully he's gone in 18 months.

Bring out your dead.
I fully agree.

1:54....it's what pope's do.
If there's one thing we've been told in homily after homily for the past five decades or so, it's that none of us will ever be called to become martyrs. Over and over again--the same drumbeat. What is the implicit message of the Ratzinger resignation, even if it was due to exhaustion? That, if God should happen to ask of us anything hard, we are automatically excused? Justin before the pagans: "Well, if I don't worship their false gods, they're liable to kill me, so I'll believe I will offer that pinch of incense and go home and take a nice nap." Thomas More in the Tower: "This is really wearing me out. It's about time to sign off on the whole Ann Boleyn thing and have done with it." Our Lord: "Take up your cross and come after Me, unless it starts to impair your health and well-being or you feel like you have more interesting things to do, in which case, refer to Amoris Laetitia Chapter 8, where it spells out why all bets are off."
So for Benedict, according to his secretary, mere earthly survival was more important than the salvation of souls and protection of the Church which had been entrusted to him?! This says it all.
