(Rome) Pope Francis confirmed the election of Msgr. Fernando Ocariz Braña the new prelate of Opus Dei .
Ocariz, who had served as a vicar general of the Personal Prelature for many years, had been appointed deputy by his predecessor, Javier Echevarria, in 2014. With the death of Echevarria last December, Ocariz took over the leadership of the prelacy until the election of a new prelate.
The election of Ocariz aA the third successor of the Opus Dei founder, Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer y Albas, and the third prelate of the personal prelature, had been expected.
The Pope is granted the right of appointment of the prelate by confirming the election. The 1982 Prelacy, established by Pope John Paul II. as Praelatura Sanctae Crucis et Operis Dei is so far the only personal prelature of the Catholic Church. For several years this has been discussed formally about the Society of St. Pius X to grant it canonical status, but a corresponding agreement has not been previously concluded. Ocariz is a member of the three-member Vatican delegation, who leads doctrinal talks with the Society of St. Pius X. He is regarded as a key author of the important Declaration Dominus Iesus in 2000.
About 95,000 members, including 2,100 priests
According to the latest information, Opus Dei numbers around 95,000 members throughout the world, who, in ecclesiastical matters and in their religious life, are not subject to their respective diocesan bishops, but to the prelate. About 2,100 priests are incardinated in the personal prelature. There are also an additional 2,000 diocesan priests, who are the priestly members of the Holy Cross Community, but are not incardinated.
Prelate Fernando Ocariz was born in Paris in 1944 as the son of Spanish exiles, who had left Spain during the Civil War. In 1971 he earned the doctorate of theology and was ordained a priest in the same year. After several years in the youth and student chaplaincy, he was called to Rome in 1986 as a consultor to the Congregation of Doctrine and the Faith. 2003 followed, working in same capacity for the Congregation for the Clergy and in 2011 for the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization .
Since 1989 he has been a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology. He was a full professor of dogmatic theology at Opus' Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. Ocariz has published numerous books on theological and philosophical topics, including a comprehensive presentation and criticism of Marxism.

Shills for Vatican 2, on the wrong side of the movement to traditional Catholicism.
ReplyDeleteWhat does that mean?
ReplyDelete"a key author of the important declaration Domine Iesus in 2000"
ReplyDeleteBergoglio is said to shun Domine Iesus. Domine Iesus being the document ordered by St. John Paul ll which states the nature of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus Christ for salvation, outside of which there is absolutely no salvation. It explains the reason why and also warns us Catholics that the judgments of God will be more severe on us because we have access to the fullness of Truth. What I fear is that since the False Prophet shuns it, Opus Dei just may be the next Franciscans of the Immaculate and the next Order of Malta. I'll be counting the days when Bergoglio sends his ghouls in to destroy Opus Dei. Opus Dei is friendly to the TLM. Its founder St. Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer who died in 1975 abhorred the Novus Ordo Mass. He was granted permission by Bl. Pope Paul Vl to say the old Mass till his death. That was after Pope Paul Vl denied St. Escrivas request for all Opus Dei Priests to say the Old Mass instead of the new. What does Bergoglio have in stall for them??
Cars hiss past my window by The Doors is a great song!
ReplyDeleteAbout two hours ago as reported by Roratecaeli blog. Bishop Bernard Fellay has stated that, "An agreement is possible without further wait". He said, "relations with the Vatican are already normal, and only the seal is missing on the agreement". A powerful force is about to come in and do battle with the heretics.
ReplyDeleteThe National Catholic Reporter today Jan 29, 2017 had an article proclaiming the negotiations between the Vatican and the SSPX as officially over. There were over 600 comments mostly condemning the SSPX for not practicing heresy. The comments area has been closed. The National Catholic Distorter must have read today's roratecaeli blog. The National Uncatholic Distorter has got its foot in its mouth. Again!!!
ReplyDeleteOD are hard wired to run with the hares and to hunt with the hounds just as long as there is a very large trough at the end to accommodate the collective snout.
ReplyDeletePaxTecum, my read of Dominus Iesus showed that it says that those who are not in the Church are in a "gravely deficient" situation, which, while very strong, does not quite seem to be extra ecclesia nulla salus. Without knowing the inner thinking of the people in the Work, although I do hang around with the local members a little, my guess is that they will adhere to the old Romanitas way of doing things under this pontificate: where the Pope is good, going along and praising it, and where he is deficient, keeping quiet and trying their best to ignore it. And generally waiting for a better future. Maybe not a bad way for all of us to go in this troubled time.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, Some misinterpret "extra ecclesia nulla salus". The Church states that if anyone knowing the Catholic Church was founded by Christ for the salvation of man, and either refuses to enter it or remain in it has no salvation whatsoever, even if he should shed his blood for Christ. Some believe it to mean that all Protestants and any other non Catholics are absolutely destined for hell. This is not what the Church teaches. Domine Iesus warns us Catholics that God's judgment of us will be more severe. When non Catholics are born outside the Church through no fault of their own and do their best to know, love and serve God, seeking to do His will, when they die in such a state then that man or woman in fact die Catholics, they die in the bosom of the Church. We must not accept any interpretation of extra ecclesia nulla salus except that of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Dominus Iesus is the Church's infallible teaching on the nature of the Church and has always been since Christ founded Her.
DeleteI am not a Feenyite, but the interpretation outlined above sounds very much like the heretical Rahnerian notion of the "anonymous Christian"---good people who try to do God's will don't know it but they are Christians. That is not Catholic teaching but Rahnerian mnodernism.
DeleteIt certainly does look that way.
DeleteActually the Anglican Converts have their own personal prelate as well, the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. https://www.ordinariate.net
ReplyDeleteTheir Missal looks excellent as well.
