SSPX May be Recognized on Monday by Pope Francis

(Rome) On Monday the 21st of November, Pope Francis Francis will publish the Apostolic Exhortation Misericordia et Misera at the end of the extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy. This was announced by the Vatican Press Office in yesterday's bulletin. Internet blogs, which are close to the Priestly Society  of St. Pius X, report that Pope Francis will come out with a bang on Monday.

According to the announcement, the pope would announce the reunion of the full unity of the priestly society established by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, with the Holy See. At the same time, he would be able to build canonically the Pius Brotherhood as a personal prelate. Is it only speculation? Since last April the signs of such recognition have been condensed.

The Society, founded in 1970, was denied canonical recognition in 1975. Since then, their status has not been clarified. Officially, it does not exist as a separate legal entity for the Holy See. An open break took place in 1988. Rome declared the founder, Archbishop Lefebvre, and the four consecrated bishops as excommunicated, for their valid if  unauthorized episcopal ordinations. The validity of the celebration of the sacraments by priests of the Society, without the permission of the Church, was repeatedly questioned. According to Benedict XVI, the excommunication was annuled. At the same time, doctrinal conversations were held between the Holy See and the Pius Brotherhood. In 2012 the recognition of the Society by Rome seemed to be near, but at the last moment  was stymied because internal Church resistance. Since then it has been assumed that the failure of recognition is a reason that Benedict XVI. had resigned.

Under Pope Francis came an unexpected resumption of contacts. In September 2015, Francis proclaimed, with the proclamation of the Holy Year of Mercy, that during the jubilee the sacrament of penance by priests of the Society was "valid and permissible". The Society then expressed its thanks for the "paternal gesture".

According to sources close to the Society, the canonical establishment was intended as a personal prelature. Thus the Society  after the Opus Dei would  be the second ecclesial community to have this new legal status. It envisages that a priest with the rank of a bishop stands at the head, and the members of this family are largely excluded from the jurisdiction of the diocesan bishops.

Oh goody, I get to be the first to say here it's a trap. I don't know how, I don't know why, but trusting this pope seems to be a very ill-advised thing, and I wouldn't recommend it. He must have something up his sleeve. I have heard the SSPX has gobs of money, could that be it? What a horrible state of affairs, that someone who has loved their Catholic faith should be in this position, to not trust the pope to this degree. What does that say about where we are, and this particular person, the pope. God help us.

NO Bishops to be replaced by NO Francis? Although I would welcome their ministry without strings attached within Spain/Europe, I feel it will make no difference until the aftermath of the Dubia is known, i.e if we are given a Traditional Catholic Pope or whether this demonic leadership will continue. I suppose the SSPX could test the water by spreading themselves within the peripheries & judge the result but the NO bullies will have to be eradicated one way or another by the Hierarchy that are solely responsible for their being in office.

Excellent news, if true. They will now have to behave and show true filial obedience, not lip service, to the Vicar of Christ.

If he does, we'd better all take back the mean things we've said about him. Sorry, Pope Francis!

Rumors. In other words, rumors. The SSPX hasn't announced a thing about a "bang" tomorrow. Pope Francis will extend the recognition of the SSPX and the Sacrament of Confession. That is the only announcement tomorrow about the SSPX that I would even anticipate. No chance tomorrow on regularization. We're not there on that. That's been made clear.

I've just had a read of Misericordia et Misera, thanks to a Vatican informer who sent me a link to where it's posted on the Dark Web. It's 800 pages long and contains a plethora of ambiguous footnotes, but aside from all that, it's pretty earth-shaking. I'd say more, but I'm sworn to secrecy.

Reconciliation with Rome is a mistake. Rome must be completely broken or it will consume everything in its control. This is completely obvious.

Does this mean EWTN will still snidely and derisively calling them "LeFebvrites"? Not sure if they throw that term around lately as I haven't owned a TV in about 8 years but they used to use this term all the time.

It would make sense that Francis will extend the SSPX faculties to hear confessions as the Year of Mercy draws to a close. It's doubtful that full recognition is coming.

It may well be, however, that the reason why heaven permitted the election of Bergoglio to the Chair of Peter because it would be far easier for him to reconcile the Society than a Pope who actually professes the Catholic Faith. Sometimes, in a fallen world, even Heaven need to write straight with crooked lines.

I totally agree with you. Not only do they have $$, but they also have plenty of vocations.

I shudder to think of all the people who fled to the SSPX in order to avoid the Modernism and scandals in the Latin Church, and now this? O dear God, FORBID it!

Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us!

St. Joseph, patron of the Catholic Church and terror of demons, pray for us!

St. Michael, defend the SSPX!

Monsignor, pray for your spiritual sons and daughters!

Many Roman Catholic Popes have stated the same words.

All I can say is when this happen, whether tomorrow or whenever (it will soon), get down on your knees and thank God for the future saint Archbishop LeFebvre and those French seminary students in Rome in 1970 that just said forget this garbage, we demand our Church. The French always save and defend the Church, it is their job and they'll do it again in the near future.

PF is just up to his old tricks. This is a good deal for PF as it enhances his currently non-existent orthodox street cred but for everyone else it is bad. First would come the merge of SSPX then the purge. Nothing that Pope Francis proposes should be considered good for the Church. Everything he does is done to bring about a New World Religion as part of the New World Order. The New World Order is the government of the anti-Christ. That's enough for now.

Well, the news has been reported. Bergoglio only extended the permission for the Sacrament of Penance to be validly offered by SSPX Priests. Its a start. The talks will continue for full recognition of the Society, this His Excellency Bishop Fellay had already stated. I can't say thank you Holy Father but I can say thank you Cardinal Bergoglio.

It didn't happen. There was no recognition of the SSPX in this letter....only the permission of people to go to confession to an SSPX priest for an indefinite period of time.
But there WAS one surprise, and an evil one. That was the allowance by "Pope Francis" for all priests to forgive the mortal sin/crime of abortion.
Didn't it use to be that someone who had an aborition was automatically excommunicated, as were those who assisted in it?
Oh well, Pope Francis seems to be of the mind that he can alter, destroy, water down whatever he wants. All he cares about is inclusiveness, and "mercy, mercy, mercy". His point is that God is a God of mercy, and whatever you do, he will forgive you.
Stalin,Hitler, Mao tse Tung, Pol Pot, Kim il Sung, etc. should be happy to hear that...wherever they are now.

Sorry, my mistake, those 800 pages were actually Amoris Laetitiae. Today's letter was mercifully short.

Very good comments from Pope Francis about abortion. He has condemned abortion so many times and does again in today's apostolic letter. But he also pushes very strongly the need for people to go to Confession if they've procured an abortion. Abortion is a "grave" sin and Pope Francis repeated that. Very good.

The letter overall is fantastic. Pope Francis is very strong about how we need to be very sincere about repentance and sinning no more if we want to be forgiven for our sins. A fantastic letter from Pope Francis.

@William Edwards.

You mean fantastic in the sense that you couldn't find anything obviously heretical about it?

Right on, Michael Dowd: we have possibly reached the nadir point of post-Vatican II mediocrity and quasi- heresy that a mere statement of the most basic traditional teaching is considered by William Edwards as "fantastic." Talk about low expectations: soon we will be "overjoyed" to hear that Francis still believes in God (a proposition increasingly open for debate even today). What joy we have been having since the great spring ushered in by Vatican Council II!

William Edwards,
U sound like you've been watching too much of EWTN.
This act of Francis actually takes a lot of steam from the pro-life cause and those who have been devoted to it. Before, the Pope, cardinals, bishops priests, all preached of the very grave sin of abortion, and that anyone who had one or assisted in one was automatically excommunicated and their souls were in danger of being lost. Pro-life marches were organized especially in the USA, but also worldwide, to combat abortion and to proclaim the sacredness of life.
I can't remember Francis ever doing as Benedict XVI or JP II or all popes before that proclaiming the sacredness of life and the unforgivable sin of abortion.
But now, who cares. According to Francis, all someone has to do who had an abortion is go to Confession. He's downgraded abortion in Catholic thinking form being the most evil of crimes...to just one you confess whevever you might go to Confession. No big deal anymore.
I feel sorry for all the people who have devoted their lives to the Pro-life cause (except for creepy Fr, Pavone...if anyone read what he recently did with a fetus).
Pope Francis just cut the legs out from under the pro-life Marchers.
If anyone was surprised by the 4 Cardinals confronting Francis about his other errors and heresies...with regards to this new decree....you ain;t seen nothin' yet. It'll blow Francis and his people away.....maybe right out of office.

Damian Malliapalli, the pope just cut the legs off pro-lifers? LifesiteNews published a positive report about what Pope Francis did. They said Pope Francis "strongly reiterated the Church’s condemnation of abortion as “grave sin,” since “it puts an end to an innocent life.”

Tons of news stories about the pope condemning abortion strongly in his apostolic letter. Lots of people across the world just heard about the pope's strong pro-life message and about going to Confession if is involved in the "grave sin" of abortion.

Very powerful from the pope. He focused attention on the Church's pro-life teachings. Fantastic.

William Edwards.

William (or Mark Thomas?), there were not "lots of news stories" about the Pope condemning abortion. All the mainstream news that people saw was that the sin of abortion was being minimized by this action. That's the way the media would spin it and the Pope knew that. It was not a good decision on his part, regardless of what he may have written in his letter which almost no one will read.

"... for their valid if unauthorized episcopal ordinations. The validity of the celebration of the sacraments by priests of the Society, without the permission of the Church, was repeatedly questioned."

The author has confused "valid" with "legal". Rome has never questioned the validity of the Sacraments offered by SSPX priests/bishops, only their unauthorized (illicit, illegal) distribution and celebration.

Once again, the SSPX doesn't understand who the enemy is ... Modernist Anti-Catholic Rome. I realize that Archbishop Lefebvre spoke out of both sides of his mouth, but that was in the mid-1970's … time has passed and the situation has turned markedly for the worse! It's as if someone is given a roadmap (LaSalette, Fatima and excellent pre-Vatican II theology) and deliberately discards it for a fuzzy I'll-feel-my-way-in-the-dark approach. Willful ignorance is inexcusable and on the part of priests will/has caused thousands of souls to suffer in Hell!

I left the SSPX in the late 1980's because I didn't want all my hard-earned donations and our Chapel turned over the V2 "popes" and "bishops". Alas, that looks to be the case now.

Anonymous your optimism is premature. Most Catholic prophecies have France (the Eldest Daughter of the Church) paying for her many crimes against the Faith. Such as her "French Revolution", her Gallicanism, her anti-clericalism, her secularization (thereby removing Christ as King), her approval of abortion, etc. Paris is prophesized as being reduced to rubble for her many crimes. I realize that this could be said of any European country or any Western society, but Paris has been mentioned specifically by name.

I read lots of reports that said the pope condemned abortion. Who cares if no one reads his letter. The news reports said he condemned abortion and that's what people know, and they also heard about going to confession.

You're correct on every issue.
The Thuc Lefebvre Gonzales and the original 9 Duarte Costa bishops are valid. The author confuses validity with what the Novus Ordo refers to as "Licit."
Personally I think the Hnilica line is valid.
