"The Eucharist is not a sacrament for the sinner but the sacrament of reconciled sinners. Just as it is the source and principle of mercy. I hope I have been clear!
Nicola Bux, August 13, 2016 at a youth meeting in Schio. The theologian spoke on the theme "The sacraments are not a joke." The Eucharist is not a sacrament for the divorced and remarried, but for reconciled sinners. The liturgist Nicola Bux is one of the most reputable practitioners of the liturgical science and is one of the leading supporters of Benedict XVI's intended liturgical renewal. He is a lecturer at the Theological Faculty of Puglia and the local Institute of Religious Sciences, consultor of the Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and spiritual assistant of the St. Josef Brotherhood of Bari. Under Pope Benedict XVI. he was also a consultant of the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Pope .

1 Corinthians 11: 23-32.
ReplyDeletePartaking of the Supper Unworthily -
Delete1 Corinthians 11:27
The Supper? That's not what is in 1 Corinthians 11: 27 et seq.:
Delete] Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. [28] But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. [29] For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. [30] Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you, and many sleep.
[27] Or drink: Here erroneous translators corrupted the text, by putting and drink (contrary to the original) instead of or drink.
[27] Guilty of the body: not discerning the body. This demonstrates the real presence of the body and blood of Christ, even to the unworthy communicant; who otherwise could not be guilty of the body and blood of Christ, or justly condemned for not discerning the Lord's body.
[28] Drink of the chalice: This is not said by way of command, but by way of allowance, viz., where and when it is agreeable to the practice and discipline of the church.
[31] But if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. [32] But whilst we are judged, we are chastised by the Lord, that we be not condemned with this world.

Not only is the Eucharist not a Sacrament for the sinner, but the context in which the Sacrament is conferred can be problematic.
ReplyDeleteSaint Thomas Aquinas-
“Sometimes the one celebrating the sacraments differently [than prescribed] does not vary those things that are essential to the sacrament [i.e., the form and matter], and in that case, the sacrament is indeed conferred; but one does not obtain the reality of the sacrament unless the sacrament’s recipient is immune from the fault of the one celebrating it differently.”
(In IV Sent., d. 4, q. 3, a. 2, qa. 2, ad 4)
Since we are all sinners, the holy Eucharist is for all who are not in a state of mortal sin as their souls are dead and It is a sacrament of the living.
ReplyDeleteTo be precise: Only baptized Catholics in the state of sanctifying grace may receive Holy Communion.

Maybe Pope Francis will go to heaven before he announces the next batch of cardinals. Wouldn't that be a treat.
