Update: he quickly backpedaled when Skojek tweeted him and returned to his 2004 self.
The Archbishop of Durban rejects Cardinal Marx's claim, the Church should apologize to homosexuals and regard same-sex unions positively.

With a pithy remark Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, Archbishop of Durban (South Africa), rejected Cardinal Reinhard Marx's demand that the Church should ask for the "forgiveness of homosexuals."
Cardinal Marx had said at a conference in Dublin, that the Catholic Church had "till a very short time ago" had a "very negative" disposition toward homosexual people. This is allegedly "scandalous and horrible". The Archbishop of Munich and Freising had demanded that the Church should apologize to homosexuals.
A same-sex partnership can not be "worthless" if it has continued over a number of years and both partners are faithful to each other. The Church must "respect" the decisions of people and it is for the state to recognize homosexual unions and giving them similar rights as married couples, Marx had said.
The of Nigerian Pro-Lifer Obianuju Ekeocha had twitted the report by the Irish Times about Cardinal Marx. Cardinal Napier then responded via Twitter: "God help us! Next, we should apologize that we call adultery a sin! Political Correctness is the main heresy today!"

Edit: We wonder if he's changed since recent years, as he was in 2004, very much in denial of the problem of aberrosexual clergy in his own conference and hostile to the Latin Mass, from Christian Order. Vox Cantor also noted a twitter slapdown. Perhaps he has been revising himself and revisiting the Gospels?

And now Bergoglio has said that the Church should apologise to homosexuals. What will His Eminence do now?
Should cardinals be "slamming" each other? When people see how these Christians love each other is it any wonder they want to nothing to do with our religion? And it is traditionalist blogs like this one that are so vehement in condemning anyone who dares to disagree with them - almost a reason in itself to think there must be something deeply wrong with this approach to religion.
The African Bishops must ask themselves are they CC leaders who stand-up for Jesus Christ, Catholic Doctrine, Tradition or are they too fragile to do that and have now decided to pay homage to Allah in the present PF & coterie's obsession with ecumenical niceness? I shouldn't think it's a gigantic decision they must make, but then who knows the minds of others?
From a man whose handle is "Savonarola". LOL
It's a nom de plume I got stuck with, that's all. But you may remember that the historical Savonarola was done to death by debased religion. It is that intolerance of difference that is so deadly, demonic indeed.
Social Justice types like you have a load of condemnations and bat's bile to go around. The only consistent thing about you is the name you chose.
Intolerance of difference? This is God's One True Faith. There is right and there is wrong. Tolerating something that's wrong is the definition of evil. You have it completely backwards Savanarola.
I can hear these snotty, passive-aggressive jibes in NPR. No thanks.
Thank you both, T and A, for so ably demonstrating the point I was making.
sav-on-a-rola-toilet-paper.....you're an ass. That's the point everyone's making.
I can well understand that Cardinal Napier would be rather reluctant to be overly critical of Cardinal Marx. One good reason is that Cards Marx, Mueller, Kasper, Schoenborn and the German group cut the theological Gordion knot at last October's synod. The Africans, who were being touted as the saviours of Catholic orthodoxy, were persuaded to agree largely by bishops like Card Napier.
He's smart and he is also very conscious of the fact that many of the African bishops have opened themselves up to the valid charge of duplicity and dissemblance. Some had been very critical of what they regarded as soft peddling on such issues as the homosexuals, cohabitation, the divorced and remarried etc while being dead silent on serious moral matters in their own backyard such as female genital mutilation, polygamy, widespread nun rape by priests and others. An understandable criticism of the African bishops is that they shut up for fear of antagonising their Muslim neighbours.
