Madrid (kath.net/KNA) A transsexual Spaniard from the diocese of Cadiz may be the godfather of his nephew. The competent Bishop of Cadiz, Rafael Zornoza Boy, did grant permission to the 21-year-old Alex Salinas following a nationally publicized controversy, reports the daily newspaper "El Pais" (Friday).

Thus, the diocese Salinas had initially rejected him as godparent because his life did not agree with the principles of the Church. He then launched an online petition, in which he asked Pope Francis for help. "The Church that I know is not so", lamented the young man.

The petition now has more than 35,000 supporters. According to "El Pais", the diocese has now changed course. To be transsexual is not a reason for exclusion from the office of godfather. In the meantime the baptism which was canelled because of a dispute may take place in September. (C) 2015 Catholic News Agency KNA GmbH. All rights reserved.

  2. I presume the person is a woman pretending to be a man. In that case, of course, she cannot be Godfather. Neither may she be Godmother under the rules of the Church. The Godmother vows to aid in the rearing of the child in the Faith and according to the unchangeable moral law.

  3. Do we have any more details on this? As Lynda said, the entire question hinges upon what the sex of this person desiring to be a Godparent actually is.

If this person was born a female (in other words, *is* a female), then this priest and Bishop who are allowing her ("him") to become a "Godfather" are guilty of blasphemy and sacrilege.

    1. Apparently, it's a woman who's being recognized as the "Godfather". The article from the Neocon Kathnet didn't include any details about that, but a few days ago, Jeff Mirus' site reported the story and says that this person is actually female. So in answer to your question: yes and yes, blasphemy.

  4. Sounds like the parents were diocese shopping, making the whole thing doubly monstrous: Bishops now competing to host freak shows.

    1. It's more like the bishop initially backed the priest up, then the media complained and got thousands of people to bomb the chancery with hate mail, which caused the bishop to change his position.
