(Rome) Benedict XVI. wrote the foreword for a book about his predecessor John Paul II.. "By the side of John Paul II. Friends and Colleagues Tell" is the title of a forthcoming book. The publisher is the Polish Vaticanist Wlodzimierz Redzioch. Corriere della Sera published some preliminary statements.
Benedict XVI. personally checked the translation of his words into Italian. On the question of the "doctrinal challenges," he had to make together with Karol Wojtyla, during his tenure as prefect of the CDF, he replied :
"The first great challenge we faced was liberation theology, which spread in Latin America. Both in Europe and in North America it was common opinion that it constituted a support for the poor and was therefore of course approved. That was a mistake. The poverty and the poor were undisputedly the subject of liberation theology, but in a very specific perspective. (...) It was not about aid and reform, but the great revolution, from which a new world should emerge. The Christian faith was used as a motor of this revolutionary movement and thereby transformed into a political force. (...) Of course, these ideas were in different variants and they not always appeared with absolute clarity, but overall this was the thrust. Such a distortion of the Christian faith had to be resisted, especially out of love for the poor and the service that would be provided in their favor. " (...)
John Paul II. "Guided us, on the one hand to unmask a false idea of liberation, on the other hand, to show the authentic vocation of the Church to the liberation of man."

If any reader could shed some light on what is meant by the phrase that is used in the end of this article: “…the authentic vocation of the Church to the liberation of man”, I’d very much appreciate it. Perhaps I should understand it from earlier writings, but if so, I'm afraid I must have missed it.
I have a sense that it is somehow related to some of that heretical nonsense in Dignitatis Humanae, but even if that’s true, I still don’t understand what is actually being said.
As I said, it’s probably just more Vatican II nonsense, but maybe Pope Benedict is suggesting something more positive. When I’m in my most charitable frame of mind I’m able to think things like that are possible.
Yep, you are probably right, "the authentic vocation of the Church to the liberation of man", definitely has that Pacem in Terris Roncali-esque ring to it. It could even be taken straight from Teihlard de Chardin's writings!
The liberation of man from sin and death by Christ through His Church isn't "Roncali-esque", but classical doctrine straight from Trent and the Fathers. There is enough heresy from Rome now-a-days, we don't need to see it where it isn't too.
I'm wondering if this is a 'subtle' if maybe not so subtle 'Grandfatherly correction' that Benedict has so appropriately weaved into the forward of his upcoming new book, to the Francis Church and the ideology within it that is presently permeating the Church. Interesting.
When card.Ratzinger was elected pope, an old priest who after joined the FSSPX, said' They will fire him, there are many ways to do it, but they will'....now in the new church all the bishops and priests removed under his pontificate, are welcomed by the BoR, why?
Tancred, do you think you could ponder on a suggestion to improve your site, which is to remove the "Anonymous" from the list of possibilities for commenting?
Thanks, Benedict Carter
That is a reasonable suggestion, BUT many of us older fellows are not up to speed with computers and aren't quite sure how to make a named statement. You younger guys have the advantage on us.
Is the HOLY FATHER really dropping these bombs or is this a ruse by HorHay? Time will tell
There is no anonymous presence on the internet. If just to make reading easier it might be something to make everyone choose a name when they post
Benedict Carter, people have a right to write under anonymous!
People like you want everyone to put a name to their comments so you can ATTACK them more easily by pointing the finger a them or so they can easily be blocked.
Shame on you!
I agree. Especially on this site, commenters are tired of being stalked by the troll Gabriel.
How does entering a name make one any less anonymous?
How would you know it was a real name, and even if it were, what would the name of some obscure person mean to you anyway?
I think I what Benedict Carter means is that the anonymous comments are difficult to distinguish from one another.
NONSENSE!
Many of us simply identify the anonymous comments we want to respond to by the date and hour they were posted.
This tactic of not allowing anonymous comments was used by Rorate Caeli and they were wrong.
Writing under anonymous has been used for centuries.
Some of us have many various reasons why to write under anonymous and there is nothing wrong with it.
It is definitely NOT a sin.
The arguments about writing under anonymous should stop right now and once and for all.
I have to disagree that Gaybriel stalks anyone. What seems to animate Gaybriel (if I may borrow and embellish on another writer's coinage), the self-appointed Defender of the Homintern (not to imply that his interests are exactly theirs ;) ), is questioning Vat 2, florid Masses, certain flamboyancies of members of the Curia, and well-founded questions about You-Know-Who. Like the cobra, he only spits venom when aroused. Let all commenting snakecharmers at Catholic sideshows beware!
BTW, I never noticed that this liberation theology obsessed any American religious, at least not those considered kooky even by rural New York of California bishops of the day. Why would, to paint a picture, Bishop Swishleigh of Liberalville, USA want to upset the cotton candy cart? He has a condo in a moderate-sized town on a Central American coast, plenty of Campaign for This or That Money coming in, the home for troubled youth is around the corner and 3 blocks, the town police chief likes his late-model American car, and the mayor, good friends of El Presidente, loves driving the mistress around in his late model German car. It's Heaven on Earth for the people who matter. Unlike Liberation Theology, which promises to bring Heaven on Earth to the People (Who Matter).
CORRECTION :
I meant to say, the arguments AGAINST writing under anonymous should stop right now and once and for all.
I don't mind anonymous, but it's easier to read a string of comments when there's a handle a nom de guerra associated with a poster, and it looks less slummy, inmho.
Anonymous...too cowardly to put your name (or even a false one!) to your own words. Nice conviction and character. And where on earth do you get off telling other people they can have no more argument on a legitimate subject once you've spoken and declared it off limits?....ohhhhhhhh....wait a mimute; I get it......can't very well sign francis or barack. yeahhhhhhhh....that'd be a problem.
susanApril 13, 2015 at 2:02 PM- IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN THEN IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO PRACTICE YOUR CHRISTIAN CHARITY.
HYPOCRITE!
I OWE YOU NO EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY I PREFER TO WRITE UNDER ANONYMOUS.
DON'T YOU DARE CALLED ME A COWARD BECAUSE OF THAT.
LIKE I SAID BEFORE IS NOT A SIN TO WRITE UNDER ANONYMOUS SO STOP SPITTING VENOM LIKE THE VIPER THAT YOU ARE.
AND TANCRED I HOPE YOU PUBLISH MY COMMENT, AND SUSAN STOP BULLYING PEOPLE.
Commenters should be allowed to use anonymous if Tancred allows it since it his blog. It allows the most freedom of expression for the writer. Maybe it's time for Susan to start her own blog so she can insist on name, social security number and birthdate.
hey "Anonymous" coward....looks like you've forgotten to take your prozac for a loooong time. MIght wanna get back on the med schedule.
and "anonymous #2"...do what ever-the-heck you want to do. Tancred allows it; you can do it, but why are you guys so very threatened by (multiple) people stating an opinion? You come across as cowards and bullies....go get a job in the obama administration; you'd fit right in.
S.U.S.A.N.
I don't see any cowards on this page, but I do see one bully.
and I see 2 idiots.
I'm not as concerned with identity as I am with clarity. Having people distinguished more clearly helps the
That's what happens when you look in a two-way mirror.
And thank you for so ably illustrating my last point.
And thank you for reaffirming my last point that there is only bully on this page.
AnonymousApril 14, 2015 at 6:18 AM - Well said!
Susan you are indeed a bully!!
Anonymous #13....

Sorry, Susan. I wouldn't click on that if you paid me. Probably some sort of computer virus. Besides, you don't even know how to reference the specific "anonymous".
Tancred I'm sorry but I don't think that clarity is an issue when you have the date and the time of the person you want to respond to or reply to.
It's still difficult to tell the difference between morons between time stamps, and which moron said what when.
Tancred, I see your point that it's hard to follow a narrative with so many writing anonymously. Excepting today, there is an average of about 30 percent anonymous here. I would say that yours is one of the more popular traditional Catholic blogs out there because you provide interesting and current articles for us to read and comment upon. But I hope you keep the anonymous option open. Thanks!!
OK...not to start another pig-pile here, but seriously, I'm genuinely interested to know...what is so gall-darn difficult or onerous about signing in under Name/URL with a nom-de-plume....Bill, or Shaneequa, or DeBlassio, or whatever-the-heck you want, just to keep things a little more able to be followed and responded to?
Am I missing something that this is a hill-to-die-on for the likes of rage-a-holic capslock guy above, or whining-bully-screamer? I mean I can see why they wouldn't want to sign their real names to what they write, but what's so difficult about doing what "gabriel" does?....pick a fake name. geeeeeeze.
Bye
Good bye!
I don't need to deal with such narrow minded and insignificant blogger either!
People like you keep intolerant people like Susan.
Shame on you for allowing her to bully others.
I hope you go to Confession otherwise all your talking means ZERO!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2y8Sx4B2Sk
Susan hell was made for people like you!
...knew you'd be back. :)
And a nice show of Christian charity indeed....thanks for showing me how it's done.
Susan you have talked enough!
Time to just keep quiet.
I don't think so, fascist.
