A Turning Point in the Franciscan Papacy

[Chiesa] ...Last Sunday Pope Francis could have said as little as possible. Instead, and this is what is new, he went further, and by far.

Not only did he put the genocide of the Armenians at the head of the other genocides of the past century, but he listed them one by one, down to the ones that are still being carried out today to the harm of many who are “persecuted, exiled, killed, decapitated for the sole fact of being Christian,” whether they be Catholic or Orthodox, Syriac, Assyrian, Chaldean, Greek. Like one hundred years ago, he said, “it seems that humanity is not able to cease from shedding innocent blood.”

Virulent reactions from the Turks, waffling from Western politicians. For Francis the peace and quiet is over.

This has been my thought also. I hope we will see more speeches like this.

His forthright comments on the Armenian Genocide also surprised me, but were these comments his own? Only time will tell, in the meantime expect some furious backpedaling by Leonardi et.al.

Don't worry, it's just an illusion, soon he will be back on the road again, next summer he'll go to Southamerica, Bosnia, the biggest centre of drilling for european jihaidist cells waiting to revenge on the 90ies war, with money and blessing cheers by Saudi Arabia......the show must go on....

I think the man who wrote this piece is reading too much into pope Francis. He is bound to be disappointed.

He's been and continues to be one of Francis' most thoughtful critics.

An excellent work on the Armenian genocide is Bjerknes's freely-available The Jewish Genocide of Armenian Christians.

Many thanks for providing that link to the pdf, it is a very important book. I downloaded it some years ago but lost it with my old computer. Most Catholics when the historical facts of the Armenian genocide are pointed out to them are unable to give any sort of response. It is impossible to wake up these sleepwalkers, such is the power of 24/7 conditioning. Is it any surprise we are also suffering a slow strangulation, not as bloody as that suffered by the Armenians, but just as fatal, and committed by the same group of people responsible for the events of 1895 to 1915.

Does it not seem disingenuous of him to neglect the genocide that is going on within our church? How many of us, our faithful priests, bishops and cardinals, religious and monastic communities are not marked for the quiet extinction with a merciful and humble smile? Chilling.

Very true! We can conclude the Church is now in the hands of hostile forces, the same forces now controlling all 'Western' countries and governments.

It is the mass eternal loss of souls that needs attention.

I'm not sure this marks any kind of turning point. Bergoglio is probably still going to make wild (quasi heretical) statements, elevate enemies of the Church like Cupich to Cardinal, and lambaste the faithful for their devotions to traditional Catholic ideas like the Tridentine Mass.

I guess it doesn't hurt to cross our fingers this marks something new, but we have two years of evidence to suggest it's merely a blip.
