Pope: Many Marriages Are Invalid Because of a Lack of Faith
Francis at traditional annual reception for judges of the Roman Rota: law "must be oriented to salvation and must not degenerate into splitting hairs"
Vatican City (kath.net/KAP) In the nullity of marriage should be examined in future reinforced the view of Pope Francis whether the relevant pairs of the importance of this sacrament were fully aware at the time of marriage. A Church court must always take into account the "context of values and beliefs or lack or absence" when he seeking a marriage, the Pope said on Friday at the traditional reception for the judges of the Roman Rota in the Vatican.
If there is an ignorance of the Catholic understanding of marriage, may be a reason for marriage annulment under Church law, said the Pope. Today this possibility is more prevalent than in the past is no longer regarded as an exception. Currently, marriage would "tend to be seen as a mere form of affective satisfaction, founded in any manner and can be changed according to the sensitivity of each," said Francis.
Marriage annulments due to lack of faith mentioned in the debate in the Church in dealing with divorced and remarried have been brought up by those who wish change to the current official practice as an alternative.
Furthermore, the Pope called on Church judges to always keep in mind that the salvation of people who turn to the Church, should not be fail because "of legal obstacles." The law must be based on salvation and should not degenerate into "splitting hairs," says Francis.
Francis expressed the desire to be able to offer all the nullity of marriage free of charge for the person concerned. "The sacraments are free. The sacraments give us grace. And the marriage process is associated with the sacrament of marriage. I myself wish so much that all processes would be free!" He was pleased to see that the Rota for people in financial difficulties, a free legal aid agency is available.

A nine-hundred dollar (CDN) charitable donation/deduction was all that I was ever asked to pay and if I could not pay it, it did not affect the process.
Where the heck is the problem?
Ah! The old 'the-dog-ate-my-catechism' exception.
No problem, it's only the franciscan way to define a catholic divorce blessed by the boR, no faith, no marriage = catholic divorce.....wonder if Henry the 8th had known it that at his time....see you all in october synod...
An excuse to justify communion to adulterers! Any reason is good to reach our intention...whether it's evil or not...whether God approves it or not!
Let's put it this way, ha? Many ordinations are invalid because of lack of faith and ignorance of the Catholic understanding of Priesthood.
If many marriages are invalid because of a lack of Faith, then many marriages should have never have been sanctified. The priest/deacon must personally be sure to a reasonable level doubt that the marriage is appropriate (there is no defense against lies), and if doubt exist marriage must be deferred. The end result undoubtedly will be fewer Catholic marriages, but truer Catholic marriages. Everyone needs to "man-up". Fewer nominal Catholics, a larger percentage of observant Catholics.
Treating the symptoms but not the cause of anything giving more poison to the patient yup Francis the Mad rolls on.
Could not agree more
The law must be based on salvation and should not degenerate into "splitting hairs," says John Paul II after resisting intense pressure to allow Cardinal Gantin to declare that Archbishop Lefebvre and four new bishops had incurred excommunication latae sententiae.
Wait a minute....
"My grace is sufficient for thee."
Oh God be merciful! Save us, your unworthy servants from Pope Francis!
When I married, decades ago, I was in mortal sin and a Catholic in name only. My spouse was a protestant. Did I have any idea what marriage would look like decades later? NO! If I had known, I may not have married. Did I have full knowledge? Does anyone? And since sacraments are free and now annulments should be free does that make this anti-sacrament on a level with a true sacrament that gives grace?
So lets just give lots and lots of specious reasons why a marriage could be invalid. And then those who want our of their marriage can just pick which one they want to claim.
Marriage is attacked by the government, sodomites, and now some in the Church too. The winking at indissolubility is a travesty.
By entertaining "faith" or lack thereof as grounds for nullity leads to the ultimate conclusion that valid marriage is only possible between two believing, practicing Catholics. Every other marriage in the world is in reality invalid. If they were to apply the same rigour to the rest of the sacraments, I wonder how many of those would be invalid too? I'm sure Fr. Feeney is looking down from heaven with bated breath in anticipation of the Pope's rigorous interpretation of "extra Ecclesiam nulla salus" and the necessity of water baptism entered into with full faith in the sacrament in order to be saved.
One need only intend permanence, fidelity, openness to life, and have no diriment impediments to enter into a valid marriage, whether it be a sacramental or a natural marriage. Anything else is degrading the law into the exact same splitting of hairs which he condemns.
Having said all that, all this talk of "communion for the divorced and remarried" is smoke screen and a stalking horse for their true objective: recognition of same-sex unions. After all, if you don't change the doctrine on paper, yet allow adulterers to receive Holy Communion anyway, then that opens up communion for everybody who is living in in all other kinds of sinful states as well.
The Church has not come so close to disaster since the Arian crisis. Even the "Reformation" is going to look like child's play by the time they have finished.
bingo!
Can someone please tell me what the big deal is? Francis is just saying (and doing) what the overwhelming majority of priests and bishops have been doing since Vatican II. He's just formally institutionalizing what has been normal for roughly 50 years.
Why are people (conservative Novus Ordo) getting angry now of all time periods? They changed the Mass, radically changed church architecture, replaced God (Tabernacle) with man (the presiders chair), introduced Communion in the hand, allowed women to go topless in Church (where the chapel veils at tho?), altar girls, Eucharistic "Ministers", Assisi/Ecumenism, and on and on. But now? NOW!?
Conservative Novus Ordo Catholics must really hate homosexuals and environmentalists. It seems that conservative political issues are more important than Jesus and the Sacrifice of the Mass aka Calvary. Americanism at its best! Pope Leo XIII pray for us!
This guy Jorge is gonna preach to me knowing full well he think homosexuals and atheists go to heaven? Wow his hypocrisy knows no limits!
Your 1st paragraph is spot on correct.
You display a selective memory, and appear disingenuous, or maybe are a homosexual environmentalist. The wreckovations were ramrodded through, you have un accountable cardinals and bishops like Mahoney ordering the Sacrament to be reserved in side altars, etc., etc,, etc. No chapel veils are the moral equivalent of blowing apart marriage, and therefore the family?
No, this is the last stand being taken against the unraveling of "the reform of the reform," and worse, the final salvo shot to destroy the last vestige of the family, thus the individual.
Everyday we get a new edition of tomfoolery from this comedian. Is he a validly ordained presbyter, we may wonder? Post-conciliar new paradigm presbyter according to the invalid protestantised Cranmerian novus ordo style liturgies and neo-sacramental rites. Looks more and more like a poorly educated lay intruder as each day passes by.
I wonder how much Faith is required to be a validly elected POPE!
Move along now folks, nothing to get excited about there are much bigger changes on the horizon. The iceberg that Captain Frank is steering the Church toward will only incidentally sink it. His intention, or should I say the intention of his handlers, is to sink western civilization.
Very true! When the family and individual is destroyed the nation is also. Welcome to the "global new order".
true!
true!
As usual, false logic, false premises, false dichotomies, based on false ideas of man, marriage, contrary to God's Law and the Faith revealed by Him. And, by the way, who is responsible for permitting and solemnising all these sacramental marriages that are invalid for lack of Faith??? If that is a problem, it needs to be addressed, by not marrying those who do not satisfy the necessary criteria for marriage - to collude in invalid marriages is a most egregious crime and mortal sin, with scandalous effects well beyond the couple and their children. Lord, save us! Let Thy Will Be Done. Reparation.
Exactly. All the signs are that he has not subscribed to the One True Faith for decades (if ever).
@Catholic!
Yours is the best comment on the entire internet in response to Francis' latest wicked personal opinion. And I can't thank you enough!
Would lack of faith invalidate the ordination of active homosexual priests or bishops?
Anon 10:14,
I'm guessing you either misread my post or are a "Conservative Novus Ordo" Catholic based on the "reform of the reform" comment.
Here's an inconvenient truth: family and marriage is already dead in the [Novus Ordo] Catholic Church. Francis is just institutionalizing something that has been a fact of life since Vatican II.
Catholics have the same divorce rates as non-Catholics. 98% of Catholics in first world countries use contraception. Acts of sodomy in the bedroom (i.e. oral sodomy) are common place and "normal' in Catholic marriage beds.
Popes like St. John Paul II already rejected traditionalist views on the family held by the Church before Vatican II. The old canon law (1917) and catechisms (e.g. Ludwig Ott) said that the main purpose of marriage was procreation and education of children, the secondary purpose was to combat lust. Now the CCC, Canon Law (1983) and Theology of the Body teach that the "unitive" aspect is on par with making children. These new teachings on the family are similar if not identical to many Protestant denominations, making it easier for ecumenical dialogue.
The Church has already made radical changes to its teaching on marriage. The only reason why people are getting angry is because their political mantras (anti-environment, anti-homosexual, et. al.) are being challenged by the current Presider of Rome. It has nothing to do with Faith but with Francis being an ally of Barack Obama. Luther said that if you destroy the Mass, you destroy the Church. The Novus Ordo is, in its purest and most reverent form, a near carbon copy of Jansenist and Calvinist liturgical theology. Where were these anti-environmental gay bashers back in the 1970's? They were sitting in their pews because their faith is political and not spiritual.
The only Catholics who deliberately breed like rabbits are SSPXers and most bishops think they're schismatics. And I use the word "deliberately breed" because Catholics in countries like the Philippines only have high birth rates due to poverty and lack of access to contraceptives.
Francis hasn't changed anything. He's just parroting the words of his predecessors (Benedict XVI, St. John Paul II, Bl. Paul VI) in an easy to understand language.
Yes! Exactly. How many times do we wonder if we had just experienced a valid Mass when the priest acts like he is at the Improv comedy club.
This pope wants all annullments to be free of charge....thereby making it easier to get annulled.
He is fostering immorality.
But it's typical for this guy. The sooner we are rid of Pope Francis, and hia cheerleaders like Cardinal Dolan and Mariadiaga, the better.
Of course it would. Let's get with this annulment program!
Anon 12:04, You are probably correct. The motivation of many 'old style Catholics' is primarily political in nature. But it has taken 30 or 40 years for the changes and intentions of the post-Vat II Church to sink in, culturally, politically, and ultimately spiritually.
Francis clearly is an idiot or far, far worse! Please God save us from this imbecile. Free annulments?
Who could not be a candidate for lack faith considering the quality of the bishops and, not to forget them, the cardinals who chose this nincompoop!
Yes, THAT Karl
How many ordinations are criminal because both parties know the ordinand is a sodomite pervert?
Well, I've heard a lack of faith could invalidate a papal election....
"Papal documents dating to the 16th century confirm that the election of a heretic would invalidate a papal election. Heresy is defined as the formal denial or doubt by a baptized person of any truth of the Catholic faith."

ROME, April 18, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the dean of the College of Cardinals, made a last public appearance at a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica before entering the conclave to vote on the successor to John Paul II. In his homily, the Cardinal who served the Church as the guardian of doctrine for 24 years, warned the Cardinals that the Catholic Church must not become prey to modern moral relativism or ideological trends. Continuing a theme Ratzinger has been developing in books, articles and interviews over the last yew years, he warned again of the advance of anti-Catholic secularism both outside and within the Catholic Church. ******* He said, “A dictatorship of relativism is being formed, one that recognizes nothing as definitive and that has as its measure only the self and its desires.” ******* The 'Pro-Eligendo Romano Pontefice' (to elect Roman pontiff) Mass is traditionally celebrated just before the Cardinal electors go into seclusion. Cardinal Ratzinger, who has been labeled by the secular media as a ‘rigid archconservative’ for his unyielding defence of Catholic religious assertions, said in his homily that the Church must not be subject to the changing winds of ideological fashion. He said, “Having a clear faith, according to the Creed of the Church, is often labeled as fundamentalism.” ******* In recent decades, Ratzinger said, the Catholic Church has been “thrown from one extreme to the other: from Marxism to liberalism, even to libertarianism; from collectivism to radical individualism; from atheism to a vague religious mysticism; from agnosticism to syncretism, and so on. Every day new sects arise.” ******* The Cardinal’s homily illustrates the Catholic Church’s most serious problem, that of heresy and apostasy within its own ranks. Since the end of the Second Vatican Council, Cardinals, bishops and innumerable priests have freely ignored, re-defined or even denied some of Catholicism’s most essential doctrines, including those regarding the nature of God and Jesus Christ. ******* Ratzinger’s surprisingly frank exposition of this threat to the Catholic Church is a warning and a reminder to the Cardinal electors that only a fully believing Catholic can be elected as Pope. Many of the Cardinal electors themselves, however, identify themselves with the so-called ‘liberal’ camp in the Church. ******* In Catholic teaching, Liberalism was a movement that arose in theological circles in the wake of the French Revolution and its teachings were condemned as heretical by a succession of popes. By the beginning of the 20th century, it had coalesced into the heresy known as Modernism which was suppressed by Pope Pius X. After the Second Vatican Council of the early 1960’s, however, the dormant liberal heresies in the Church reappeared, especially in Europe and North America. ******* Among the Cardinals are a number of liberals who have at least implicitly repudiated a number of key Catholic doctrines such as the inerrancy of the scriptures, the reservation of the priesthood to men, the necessity of the Church for salvation, or even the bodily resurrection of Christ. Papal documents dating to the 16th century confirm that the election of a heretic would invalidate a papal election. Heresy is defined as the formal denial or doubt by a baptized person of any truth of the Catholic faith. ******* Speaking, perhaps, to the ‘liberal’ faction, Ratzinger told the Cardinals, “An 'adult' faith does not follow the waves of fashion and the latest novelties; an adult and mature faith is profoundly rooted in friendship with Christ... We must bring this adult faith to maturity, to this faith we must lead Christ's flock.” ******* Ratzinger has written that the Catholic Church of the 21st century must likely reconcile itself to being smaller and less powerful in geopolitics while leaving less room for internal dissent.

Any "mass" celebrated ala Paul vi 1969 style is invalid.Read the council of Trent catechism! Pius V and his council decided this in 1570.This is not an insult, nor is it ridicule.Dear Catholics, please read and learn your true faith.
Sometimes I wonder if we're headed for a new dark age.The true catholic church is still alive, albeit in a small remnant. The novus ordo is smashing what's left of the conciliar church. Will true catholics who embrace the faith pre-1951 become persecuted like the first 4 centuries of Christianity?
While I'm no fan of Jorge Bergoglio,to condemn him as a black sheep of Vatican 2 is historically inaccurate. What he says, thinks, practices, and believes in no different than the last 5 'popes'.I say this in charity with all due respect.
Well that eliminate's every pope since 1951! Pius XII was a pope until he changed the Easter Vigil in 1951.He is not the conservative warrior like some will have you believe. The post 1951 changes under Pius XII laid the groundwork for Vatican.Subsequent changes in 1955 & 1958 were disastrous.Lastly,he appointed Cardinals that would 5 years later elect the lefty radical Paul VI.
I would.be happy to give ber gog lio a free annulment from the chair of Peter!
If "Many Marriages are invalid because of a lack of Faith" then people who have little to no faith can abuse the sacraments without worry to be considered sinners. ??? You decide.
