Bishop Orders Return of the Tabernacle to the Middle of the Sanctuary in His Diocese

Tabernacle: All Holy Sacrament of the Altar as the
Center Point of the Sanctuary
(New York) The Bishop of Springfield in Illinois, Msgr. Thomas John Paprocki Joseph, gave instructions to return the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament back into the center of the sanctuary in the churches of his diocese.
Bishop Paprocki, who was appointed in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI., wrote the pastoral letter Ars et celebrandi adorandi to his diocese. In it he points to the rich tradition and teaching of the Church for celebration and adoration of the Holy Eucharist.
The bishop also outlines the historical development over the past decades and is critical of the displacement of the Blessed Sacrament from the center of the chancel and sometimes even its utter removal from the sanctuary. The places in which the Blessed Sacrament was banished, sometimes are not more than rudimentarily adapted closets. This removal of the Blessed Sacrament to often difficult-to-find side chapels has to come to an end.

Pastoral Letter Ars et celebrandi adorandi

Bishop Paprocki of Springfield Illinois in
"With this in mind, in order that more of the faithful will be able to spend time in adoration and prayer in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord, I direct that in the churches and chapels of our diocese, tabernacles that were formerly in the center of the sanctuary, but have been moved, are to be returned as soon as possible to the center of the sanctuary in accord with the original architectural design. Tabernacles that are not in the center of the sanctuary or are otherwise not in a visible, prominent and noble space are to be moved to the center of the sanctuary; tabernacles that are not in the center of the sanctuary but are in a visible, prominent and noble space may remain."
The first part refers to churches which were built before the liturgical reform, the other two parts on churches built afterwards.
Bishop Paprocki calls the believers to mind that the proper reverence for the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect. The bishop calls the diocese, to spend more time with the Eucharist to promote Eucharistic Adoration and Eucharistic processions through the streets of the parishes.

The fertile soil of Chicago

The Diocese of Springfield is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Bishop Paprocki comes from the Archdiocese of Chicago and in 1978 was ordained a priest there. In 2003 Pope John Paul II. appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago under Francis Cardinal George. Pope Francis accepted the Cardinal's resignation last September 20  for reasons of age at 77 years. The appointment of Blaise Cupich, his successor, is considered one of the most controversial personnel decisions of the Argentine Pope. Msgr. Cupich is considered one of the liberal outsiders in the US episcopate.
Cardinal George recently exercised strong criticism of Pope Francis. Both Chicago and Springfield have an above average number of priestly vocations. Bishop Paprocki is also a promoter of old Rite institutions in his diocese.

Removal of all Free Standing "Peoples' altars" says Bishop Oliveri

Example of an unnecessary duplication: new "people's altar" before already existing high altar
The measure of Bishop Paprocki is reminiscent of a measure of Bishop Mario Oliveri of Albenga-Imperia, Italy.  Bishop Oliveri was to remove all the "peoples' altars" from the churches of his diocese in which they appeared  because of the presence of a senior, high altar, made an unnecessary duplication and was incomprehensible. These and other measures of the bishop of the Catholic renewal, earned him the enmity of some ideological Church circles.
Against Bishop Oliveri, there was last October in the interaction of internal church staff and unchurched circles a smear campaign started with the intent to obtain his deposition that can be hoped for by Pope Francis (see the report Papal Purges  and their Claques- direction, not allegations decisive? ).  Msgr. Oliveri is still the acting bishop of the diocese.

  1. Time for all the "conservative" bishops to make similar plays and call the bluff of Francis and Company. Force them to make their move out in the open and all at once instead of behind closed doors as they destroy the Church incrementally.

Were I a Catholic bishop I would go even further than Paprocki. I would put wheels on the Cranmer tables and roll it out into a dusty corner somewhere and only bring it out at some inconvenient hour of a Sunday afternoon once week. And that would only be a beginning.

Go for it, Catholic bishops! Go on the offensive now before your anti-Catholic confreres get in position to remove the opportunity!

    1. Just a bit of nostalgia- when parishes first put in the "Cramner Tables," they did have wheels! At least mine and a couple of other parishes did. Some Masses were still said at the altar, so the CTs needed to be wheeled off to the side.

    2. That was the low burner heat for the "frog in the pot". The architects of evil who have perpetrated this fraud and forced it upon The Church turned the heat up slowly lest the Faithful feel the heat and quickly beat out the flames.

  2. I agree CJ, thank the Dear Lord for Bishops Like Bishop Paprocki, Burke and others that are making a stand. I would like to see even a stronger stance taken before as you say, they destroy the Church incrementally.

  4. A few years back I had written to Father Bruno Forte who was being promoted as a theologian by the Vatican. It was on the salvation issue. He acknowledged receiving my e-mail but did not comment on it.

He interprets Vatican Council by assuming that there are known and visible exceptions to the dogma mentioned in the Council. How can we humans know or see exceptions to extra ecclesiam nulla salus ?

St.Benedict Centers USA keep affirming Vatican Council II but not like the SSPX or the liberal bishops

  5. The above comment should be on the post related to Archbishop Bruno Forte.
It went wrong like the altar being taken away from the sanctuary.
At the American Church in Rome, the Church of Santa Suzanne, when I enter, I have to turn to the left, and genuflect.

  6. How is +Paprocki not violating the norms of the GIRM in so doing? The GIRM and numerous commentaries issued with it very clearly explain that the Tabernacle is not to be on the Altar, and ideally not even in the main Church. Fr. Cekada's Work of Human Hands gives ample evidence of this.

    1. Canon 938 ยบ2. The tabernacle in which the Most Holy Eucharist is reserved should be placed in a part of the church that is prominent, conspicuous, beautifully decorated, and suitable for prayer.

CCC 1183 The tabernacle is to be situated "in churches in a most worthy place with the greatest honor." The dignity, placing, and security of the Eucharistic tabernacle should foster adoration before the Lord really present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.

GIRM (1975) 276. It is highly recommended that the Holy Eucharist be reserved in a chapel suitable for private adoration and prayer. If this is impossible because of the structure of the church or local custom, it should be kept on an altar or some other place in the church that is prominent and properly decorated.

  8. Breaking news... After 2000 years Pope Francis forbids use of Latin Language in Catholic Church
Apocalypse: after 2000 years Pope Francis removes Latin language as official language of the Catholic Church.

This way Pope Francis starts a controlled demolition of the Catholic Church, no Latin mass also.

    Ignoramus??...

    3. Okay, never mind. Franciscans of Portugal is a conspiracy nutter. On one of his blogs he said the "real" third secret said that the end of the world will happen on May 13 2013.

The devil must love manipulating people with all this end times hysteria, after all he's been doing it for thousands of years.

    3. The Tabernacle contains Almighty God, it is the central focus in Church. The Novus Ordo replaced God with man because the Presider's Chair took the place of the Tabernacle as the central point of focus in a church, God in the Most Holy Tabernacle has literally been put off to the side.

The Novus Ordo tables are an abomination of Biblical proportions:

"... they sacrificed upon the altar of the idol that was over against the altar of God..." 1 Machabees 1: 62

  11. God bless him! A bishop who loves the Lord in His most Blessed Sacrament. Meanwhile I read that in Cebu in the Philippines, the bishop wants the tabernacle out of prominence.

  14. I heartily applaud this Bishop. I live in an archdiocese in Canada where our only Cathedral has the 'bishops chair' where the Tabernacle should be. No wonder people stopped genuflecting years ago, no one can tell where Our Lord resides anymore. Many parishes here have returned Our Lord resting place to it's proper and traditional place.

    1. Actually a Cathedral should not have a Tabernacle upon the altar or even in the main Church. The Bishop is the source of the Sacramental life of the Church. Look to the great Cathedrals of Catholic Europe: they have Blessed Sacrament chapels right next to the main Church.

  15. Best Wishes to Our Great Bishop.
Your Loyalty to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, has taken a back set in many parishes, but have heard some are doing this but still having a room to the side with the other tabernacle.
    God will reward you.

  17. We need to take Francis on because he is a subversive pope with non-catholic theology. True Roman Catholics must stand firm as charitably as is possible in such disoriented times in The Vatican against the modernist church it runs.
