Order of Drought and the Order of Flowering -- the "Institute of the Word Incarnate"

San Rafael: Priestly Seminary of the Institute of the Incarnate
Word in Argentina
(Buenos Aires) Some have hardly any vocations, others have it in abundance. "It will not have a reason," writes the Spanish Catholic Church historian and blogger Francisco de la Cigoña and reports on the flourishing seminary of San Rafael Instituto del Verbo Encarnado (IVE) in Argentina.
In Argentina, the homeland of Pope Francis, the Catholic Order of the Institute of the Incarnate Word was born in 1984 in San Rafael (Mendoza).  Some years later, in addition to the apostolic, a contemplative branch of the order was also established. In 1988, with the servants of the Lord and the interior of the Virgin of Matará (SSVM), a female branch, which is also divided into an apostolic and a contemplative branch.
The founder of the flourishing religious family was the Argentine priest, Carlos Miguel Buela. In 2004, the it became a canonical establishment as a congregation in episcopal law by the Bishop of Velletri-Segni in Italy. In Segni there is also the Generalate of the religious family, which in addition to the male and female branch, also includes a Third Order. The monks and nuns take the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience including a fourth Marian vow.

The Order is now almost a thousand priests and is active world-wide  with 14 Provinces in 40 states and nearly 80 dioceses. In Europe, the provinces of Italy exist (with Malta, Greece and Albania), the Netherlands and Ukraine. In Germany, the Order serves a parish in the German capital of Berlin. In Luxembourg there is a nunnery in Peppange. It is one of ten contemplative monasteries of the nuns of the Order.
The Order operates to care for the persecuted Christians and evangelization in a number of countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Syria and Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine, Egypt and Tunisia.

Order Leadership and Spirituality

The Superior General since 2010 is the Argentine Father, Carlos Walker.  Born in Buenos Aires in 1959, he was ordained a priest in 1983. After various pastoral activities in Argentina and the USA, he joined the Order. From 1993-2001 he became Provincial in Argentina, and in 2001-2010 Vicar General.  During this time he received his doctorate at the Angelicum in Rome.
In Buenos Aires   there is also the Founder, Carlos Miguel Buela who was born in 1941 and ordained a priest in 1971. These  priests inculcated by Mary, have taught dogmatic theology at various Catholic universities in Argentina. The foundation of the religious family took place on March 25, 1984. On that day,  Pope John Paul II.  consecrated the world to the Blessed Virgin of Fatima. Father Buela was Superior General from 1984-1994 and from 2001-2010.
The spirituality of the monastic family is based on the Incarnation of the Son of God as the Incarnate Savior and God as a child. It leans heavily on the spirituality of St. Louis Marie de Montfort. Priorities for the Order are the worship of God, the salvation of souls and reparation for the de-Christianization of culture. The Spiritual Exercises are based on the model of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who hold popular missions  as St. Alphonsus Liguori.

Not Just Friends

In 2000 the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, undertook the attempt to close the religious seminary of San Rafael. He found support from the then Apostolic Nuncio for Argentina, who since then became his friend, today's Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló. The closure of the convent's Seminary of San Rafael at that time did not succeed.
Priests and Deaconal Ordinations on December 6, 2014
Bergoglio and Abril had recently attempted again to close  a blossoming seminary: Pope Francis sent the Cardinal last summer as an apostolic visitor in the Paraguayan Diocese of Ciudad del Este. The brief was to inspect the seminary under Bishop Rogelio Livieres, which had experienced extraordinary flowering   (see Vocation Boom by Old Mass - Pope Francis arranged visitation to ). In the seminary of the small diocese  (12 percent of Catholics Paraguay) had more  seminarians studying than in all the other seminaries of the other dioceses Paraguay together.
The seminary was not closed, but priestly ordinations were suspended and Bishop Livieres removed because he would disturb the "harmony" in the Episcopal Conference. The future of the seminary, where the seminarians were trained in both forms of the Roman Rite, has since been suspended. There are efforts to integrate the seminary again with all the other Paraguayan seminaries in Asuncion.
The Instituto Verbo Encarnado also works in Paraguay and this amazing little in the Diocese of Ciudad del Este.
This past December 6 was a day of rejoicing for the Congregation. Diocesan Bishop Eduardo Taussig consecrated in the cathedral of San Rafael six new priests of the Order and a number of seminarians as deacons who have been trained in the seminary of San Rafael.  Other of the order's seminaries have been established: since 1998  in Washington DC (USA), since 2001  an international seminary in Segni (Italy) and since 2002 in Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.

  1. How very typical that this worthless Pope Francis would attempt to shut it down. He hates everything truly Catholic.

Did anyone see his at Christmas Midnight Mass..... with his long sour , unsmiling face sitting in his chair. Someone should have kicked him in his rear end and told him to "get out and go back to ARGENTINA"

  2. On this Christmas Day I pray for Francis as always. But always with a very heavy heart. The petty viciousness and hypocrisy which seem to have enveloped the Vatican must be reported as widely as possible, Thanks EF for keeping us informed. God bless you and your (sadly) necessary work in 2015.

  3. Sounds like an apostolic visitation may be in order here. Cannot have flourishing traditional orders! The Church and the pope want more like the 'nuns on the bus'...And the pope is not likely to forget that the seminary did not get closed back when.

  4. Also for the pope to send his friend to 'visit' the diocese of Bishop Livieres says to me that the outcome had already been determined in this instance.

  5. I am sorry to pour cold water on this. I heard about this order some time ago, but since then found a Blog with much criticism of it,namely that they are uncritical admirers of John Paul II (and their website has a section titled John Paul the great), the founder supported the Assisi scandal, they are against the old Mass and the SSPX and "attacked" the SSPX in Argentina. I don't know more than this and have no direct experience of them. What I have read may be entirely wrong; just worrying. I wish that there was a Traditional "Order" or fraternity not linked to a religious Order for Traditional laity. Good wishes.

  6. From the reading that I have done, this Order does a poor job of screening and rejecting sexual deviants. The admission of these deviants into the ranks of the clergy is unconscionable. It is the undoing of the Holy Church since 1962.

  7. While we sit in our comfortable homes in the US or the UK, IVE priests and SSVM sisters are ministering to the hapless Catholics in Iraq, Syria, and, most interestingly, in Gaza, at the only Catholic parish there. See in general,
    http://ivemissions.verboencarnado.net.
Adding to this data point are some others, including that Fr. Buela was a disciple of Julio Meinvielle, who is cited favorably by among others, H.E. Bishop Williamson, and IVE maintain web sites devoted to Fr. Meinvielle as well as rhe great old Roman School Thomist, Cornelio Fabro, and in general follow what seems to be traditional teaching, and I would suggest that they are sound, despite the criticisms of some. I also note that what I have seen them say about the SSPX, while i might disagree, is just about the same as i have heard FSSP priests say.

  8. A Christmas meditation from the Directory of Spirituality of IVE, found at
    http://www.iveamerica.org/new/images/stories/ive-constitutions-and-spirituality.pdf

85 Among other things, the birth of the Incarnate Word urges us to strictly live holy poverty since whoever has God is extremely rich. It also urges us to live in joy – a fruit of the Holy Spirit and a consequence of the Incarnation – as the angel announced to the shepherds: I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people (Lk 2:10). This is the joy of the Virgin Mary, the “cause of our joy”; rejoice, Mary (Lk 1:28) said the angel Gabriel. She herself, with great docility, proclaimed: my spirit rejoices in God my Savior (Lk 1:47). Therefore, all generations have called her and will call her blessed (Lk 1:48) – happy in a sublime degree.
86 The mystery of the Birth of the Incarnate Word urges us to work in the most difficult places – those where no one wants to go – and when it is impossible to continue working there, after a night of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we should ask the Bishop to send us to an even worse place.

  9. Again, I am going on secondary sources, I think from a blog called, something like, causes for concern about I.V.E. They claimed that Fr Buella, who as you say is a disciple of the excellent Fr Meinveille, is an uncritical admirer of John Paul II and did not condemn the Assisi meeting convened by him. They are also, apparently, not promoting the Traditional Mass. I REALISE FULLY that these allegations may be written about by cruel enemies and I am anxious about writing them.Someone may be able to refute them. They otherwise seem to be excellent people doing a fine work. I have no knowledge of the sort of people they admit.

  10. It's the same old story, praise the other religions, condemn true catholics, it doesn't matter the causes, the result is always the same, guilty for being too catholic. Concerned about the midnight mass and urbi et orbi benediction, well the guy dressed in white didn't even by far look like a pope, and I miss more and more his predecessor in red slippers, red mozetta and his papal vestements, thank God he was a Pope, not a bishop. God bless+.

  11. If this Order is one of John Paul II cheerleaders, applauding everything he did (a lot was not good for the Church), and that they also are against the Tridentine Latin Mass and the SSPX and Catholic tradition....they who cares if they are subject to investigation.
They are probably yet another "new movement" or "new community" born of Vatican II that has been the subject to scandal (including sexual abuses). There is a long list of "new movements" which have been open to scandal.
In that these people apparently do not support the traditions of the Catholic Faith but are rather cheerleaders for Vatican II etc, then close them down,.

  12. A stunning news from Vatican, the boR wants to abolish the swiss guards, the guards are gathering signatures for a message to be sent to the boR, the news on a german blog. No comment.

    1. Anything that speaks of tradition; anyone that upholds tradition. Without tradition, all objectivity, all Faith, all truth is lost.

  14. Okay. Found the website http://www.iveamerica.org/new/ Saw Cranmer table on home page. First tab clicked showed a JPII youth pilgrimage banner. Definitely not for Catholic consumption.

How can so many of these religious be fooled?? Morphs and hybrids are more dangerous to ignorant souls who do not know the Faith than overt Novus Ordoism. At least with Nordoism it looks as bad as it smells. Yet this phoney "traditional" order is not even thinly veiled.

Accepting compromise with regard to the Faith is deadly. I hope they wake up and smell the brimstone before it is too late.
