(Rome) Should we condemn someone, evaluate or judge someone? Yes or No? Pope Francis is causing, and not for the first time, a headache with his statements. Some papal statements appear even contradictory for the inexperienced observer.
Sometimes a statement saying the exact opposite of another or at least gives the impression of internal inconsistency or ambiguity. The problem is not small, because the Vatican is silent on which to provide instead of a clarifying and explanatory interpretation. At the recent "headache" that Pope Francis prepares, draws the Vatican expert Sandro Magister's attention.
.
Judgments: Yes or No?
Sandro Magister
In less than two days Pope Francis uttered a first harrowing condemnation, which became the headline on the front pages of all the newspapers, and then the whole his morning sermons in Santa Marta was used to exhort the Christians to never judge and condemn anyone, but always to be only a defender and advocate for others.
The judgment,, better the condemnation, he pronounced on June 21 against the Calabrian mafia `ndrangheta. His words were: "If you're not worshiping the Lord God worship, you become a worshiper of evil, as there are those who live by bad reputations and violence ... The `Ndrangheta's worship of evil and contempt for the common good. This evil is to fight to remove, you must tell him no ... Those who go in their lives this way of evil, as the Mafiosi, are not in communion with God! They are excommunicated "
The chroniclers reported that the 200,000 in attendance broke out at this point in a rousing applause. A round of applause, followed by an even bigger worldwide applause from the media.
But the fact is that Pope Francis is laughably giving equally general consent whenever he says not to make judgments, from that memorable "Who am I to judge?", which is probably the most widely cited and acclaimed worldwide message of this pontificate.
This leads to a headache. Francis is a Pope, who judges, evaluates, acquits, demands, apprehends. At the same time he preaches incessantly, that one should never judge, neither accuse nor condemn.
Whoever judges is "always wrong," he said in his sermon on 23 June in Santa Marta. He errs, the Pope continued, "because he puts himself in the place of God, who is the only judge." He claimed "the authority to judge everything: people, life, everything." And "Judging with the ability," he said he has also to have the ability to "condemn".

With the excommunication of the Mafiosi, two days earlier, everything sounded quite different. Monsignor Nunzio Galantino, Bishop of Cassano all'Jonio and favorite of Pope Francis who was made the Secretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference, translated the words of the Pope: "The excommunication means that the mafia life is locked from the Church. You have chosen evil over a system of life. And when that happens, you're out of the community. You can not receive the sacraments, not baptism or sponsor confirmation, can not belong to a patronage committee, nothing. It's not your community. And it does not matter that you have the image of the Mother of God or a family altar or the Bible in the rat hole where you hide: that means absolutely nothing."
Do not judge, no way! However, there is a caveat: If the affected mafioso is hiding in a "rat hole", which is a sign that he is volatile and has been condemned by earthly justice, while if he is not convicted, it is not so easy for the Church to condemn him.
Even harder it is, the condemnations of the Pope against the mafiosi to bring "corrupt" and all the others over which he imposes the judgment every day with uninterrupted calls, never to judge anyone. These statements astonish the more so since they come from a successor of Peter, to whom the keys were entrusted to bind and to loose and everything he binds on earth and triggers will be bound and loosed in heaven. A supremacy which he holds over the whole Church.
To be precise, Pope Francis added on June 23 in Santa Marta that "the only one who judges is God and those to whom God gives the power to do it." But he did not say who they are, which is why the rate went down. The mystery continues.

Reason, along with so much more, has been jettisoned by the New pseudo-Religion.
ReplyDeleteIt's all meaningless slogans with no truth in sight. The new religion is Liberation Theology or Francisism. Pray for the FFI/FSI.
DeleteIt's because of things like this that make me think about becoming atheist. So what if I'm going to Hell? This pope says we can be good without God, certainly without his religion which he can't even figure out himself.
ReplyDeleteThey've denied me my right to proper worship; so they take away my spiritual life. So, I'm despairing and going to Hell- but what's the point of resisting the road to Hell, if I've got nothing else?
I don't want to go to Heaven knowing people I love will end up in Hell because they've been following heresy or and invalid mass, or because they don't care about their sins.
Do the bishops and Pope Bergoglio care? I don't think so. They'd feel sorry, but they have more important things to do than save a soul.
A jesuit who knew the jesuit - Bergoglio - once commented that there is nothing off-the-cuff about him, and that he knows how to spell the word, 'power'. I guess that's niether here nor there, but we can sure see the fruits of this 'little-god' of discord. As for the souls of all the world, first we have to take care of our own, and God for certain makes sure we have the means for that. Sister Lucy once said there'll be a time when all the faithful have is the rosary and the sign of the cross. There are so many unpriested parishes on the planet now that is true already; and of those parishes with a priest, many may as well have nothing other than liturgy of the word anyway, because what presider there has completely abdicated to feminists and all the other 'ists, so as to be a danger and not a nurture to souls. At any rate, take the chatisement rather than the dispair (easier said than done) and pray for better days. There is some comfort in knowing we are all in the same boat.

PP Franciscus : Who am I to judge?
The principle of judging the sin but not the sinner has long been established in Catholic thinking.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, the Pope as Keeper of the Keys with the power to loose and to bind, (inevitably involving judgement), has an ongoing duty to judge.
Additionally, as a priest and when hearing Confessions, he has a duty, “in persona Christi”, not only to judge the sin but also the sinner so that he can decide whether to grant or withhold absolution.
As for the rest of us, the world being what it is, we exercise judgement constantly whether it’s a car coming out of a side opening, getting the right change, whether the beggar just wants beer money, or whether to go down a particular street at night.
Anyone who doesn’t maintain a keen sense of judgment these days is heading for trouble, and making matters very difficult for his Guardian Angel.
I don't think we have to worry about Pope Francis for very long. He's apparently sick again, for the 2nd time in two weeks.
ReplyDeleteEach time he's sick and cancels appearances, the Vatican is hardpressed to find an excuse. He's been ill 3x in little more than a month. And he increasingly looks very ill. His face is getting that pallid, sunken look of someone who has a very serious problem. That the Vatican is hiding.
I would be surprised if Pope Francis is alive in two years.
I hope in the next coming conclave, they elect a Catholic, who acts and looks like the Pope.....a la the great Pope Benedict XVI.
Catholics like you who would hold up Pope Benedict XVI as exemplary Catholic pope scare me more than the most liberal. Why? Because you find the first pope is NOT as bad as Francis and follow him. Follow a real Catholic pope and be ye perfect as your Father in Heaven instead of choosing the lesser of evils.
DeletePraying in the Blue Mosque...another Assisi...praying in synagogues..saying that John was not the author of his Gospel...saying the Jews need not be evangelized..praising America's religious liberty...promulgating Summorum Pontificum as an act of toleration...abdication..establishing the "new Office" of pope emeritus..if this is "great" then Hilary is a beauty queen
DeleteNo wonder he is sick - ecumenist par excellence and an obsessive interconfessionalist. Indeed, he is very sick and coukld do with a visit from Our Blessed Lord to heal his blindness.
ReplyDeleteHe has caused me to cease attending Mass.
ReplyDeleteHis entire being is scandalous to me.
Karl
Hello, Karl. The Pope has said/done, failed to say or do, much that is causing grave scandal. But do not let this stop you doing what we are required by God and the Deposit of Faith to do. You have the requisite knowledge, you cannot plead ignorance (as I'm sure many could, due to their having been taught lies by those in authority). The suffering is great. You suffer for the great offences being done to God by those who are charged with leading the Church, working to save all souls. Offer up your suffering in reparation. But do not give up fighting for your own soul. We must continue to obey the mandates of the Faith. Seek out other faithful so that you can support one another in the true Faith, and through the terrible trial of this General Apostasy. God bless you.
DeleteKarl, do not stop attending mass and receiving the sacraments! Find a parish that offers the Latin mass- they are less imbued with the spirit of the council and I think you will be happier. Do not let the error of men in the church dictate your faith. They are not the church.
ReplyDeletePope Ambiguitus I.
ReplyDeleteWhen will the "excommunications" of the slaughterers of children begin?
Never...they have connexions of power, especially in the US.
Can he give a sermon with the same words against the likes of Biden, Pelosi, etc? Will any bishop in the US have the "stones" to do this?
Never. They seem to be beholden to the "princes" of this world and the "manna" they bestow.
St Peter & St Paul--both martyred for their steadfast proclamation of the truth--PRAY FOR THE CHURCH!
@Anonymous: June 28, 2014. "I don't think that we have to worry about Pope Francis for very long". It is now Dec 28, 2018 and turning the corner into 2019. How much longer, Lord?
