Edit: Die Welt must have some stake in portraying Vienna's Cardinal in a conservative light. He's not the only one.
[Die Welt] Encouragement comes from an unexpected corner: The Catholic Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna is pleased with the victory of drag queen Conchita Wurst at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). There "great diversity" in the garden of God, Schonborn told Austrian journal "Heute" . Even those people who did not feel at home with his portrayal, gave "the respect to which we all have a right."
On the gender identity of the 69-year-old told the Archbishop of Vienna, he felt it as a "wonderful idea" of the Creator that he created man male and female. From this polarity and mutual supplement is apparent attraction, "to draw oneself to another," but also "to struggle with one another". In the context of the creation it was "God's most fascinating idea." Thus, the intriguing idea is also embodied in Conchita Wurst.
The mild-hearted reaction of the Catholic Church is a bit surprising. Regarding the church and homosexuality, Schönborn had always shown a tough stance. [No he hasn't. Remember his intervention on behalf of an aberrosexual parish council member?] The Russian Orthodox Church had practiced the same heavy criticism at the output of the ESC.

DeleteThough I am the Light
you walk in the darkness
Though I am the Might
you follow the barkless
Though I am the Truth
you prefer the lier’s booth
Though I am the Way
you say it’s ok to be gay
Though I am the Life
you choose eternal death
Where weeping and gnashing is rife
and for sure there won’t be any Meth
Oh you stubborn generation
stop this horrific aberration
You keep flirting with the seducer
so don’t blame Me, blame the abuser
Though I am the utter Merciful
I’m also the eternal Just
Your behavior is extremely hurtful
My patience you finally bust.
Wake up and smell the coffee or it will be too late.
Lord, please, hasten Your Coming

Is that the Cardinal or the performer depicted in the photo? It doesn't indicate which.
ReplyDeleteOne and the same - mentally....!
DeleteI come from a mixed Catholic and Orthodox family. I am a convinced, practicing and small "o" orthodox Catholic. The question I keep asking myself is: how much longer will the Orthodox want to continue official dialog with Catholicism? Between the Catholic Church's contrived, manufactured liturgy and this sort of nonsense, I'm not sure what the seperated brethren will find attractive or compelling.
ReplyDeleteMy Orthodox relatives were enthusiastic about Pope Benedict, but I haven't seen or talked to them since the election of Francis. I don't look forward to the conversation.
Is that particular photo an accident? This time around, you can bet the historic catacombs will be blockaded.

ReplyDeleteIn the photo, the drag queen is apparently mocking Christ on the cross. There will be no mercy for that kind of blasphemy.
ReplyDeleteDid you read the original 'Heute' article? Die Welt, I beleive, has distorted the cardinal's meaning. I thought the cardinal was rather clever in criticizing the Wurst phenomenon indirectly by praising the difference between the sexes. I am no fan of Schönborn, especially after he stabbed Pope Benedict in the back twice (Not defending him and even criticizing him over the Williamson and Linz auxiliary bishop debacles), but I am willing to give him a pass on this one. He made clear that those who do not approve of tranvestism and this push for a 'genderless' society must be respected. Given the tone and level of intelligence expected of the 'Heute' readership (It is more of a tabloid than a newspaper), I do not think he could have taken a tougher line for the moment. He walked in to a definite trap and came out of it unscathed, while still expressing disapproval. I must say that it made his intelligence apparent to all, which only makes his actions with regard to the homosexual parish council member all the more outrageous and inexcusable..
ReplyDelete'Die Welt' took Pornokardinal's comments as a kind of endorsement.
DeleteMaybe if he weren't so habitually dishonest he could get away with being nuanced and subtle...
I bet the Cardinal is a "closet Queen"........
ReplyDeleteTo "Anonymous" re: 23 May 14: I'll bet the house you're right. "Cardinal" Schoenborn is as queer as a $3 bill. He's as "sweet" as his country's Struedel.
