1,200 Year Old Monastery Plan to be Implemented
Meßkirch (Catholic news / RV). The monastery of St. Gallen is to be rebuilt for the first time according to its famous plan of the 9th Century. The German Meßkirch Project is to be realized 20 kilometers north of Lake Constance, 30 kilometers from the Swiss border. The construction period is expected to last around 40 years, reports the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" on Wednesday. On the 24-hectare community ground arises the first replica of the famous St. Gall Monastery plan from the 9th Century. As seed money for the project, 1.2 million euro are available - thanks to contributions from the European Union, the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, of county and township, which has leased the site for 59 years to its support. After four years, the project must be self-supporting; 120,000 visitors are required with an entry fee of 9 euros.

Kathnews... and Spiegel Edit: sadly, although they are using the 9th century building methods, it doesn't appear they will be using real Monks.
I have much respect for you and any others that do right with your religion especially when it's "within" not whining and moaning about other denominations. I saw recently that some guy in Scotland got fined for voicing a reasonable opinion which is very embarrassing and the lack of free speech in democratic countries is terrible. I just followed you on twitter which lead me to here, I was gonna direct message you there but this have to do. Anyways I wanted to invite you to come check out: http://thebeerbarrel.net/ we are a free speech site that has many good catholics and other christians. No reason for anyone to hold their tongue, so this is my humble request perhaps you can bring some highbrow activity towards our forum! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely check it out. Thanks.
DeleteThe backdrop is disgusting. It immediately put me off.
DeletePeople who are aware of the pernicious effects of Cultural Marxism are light years ahead of most. I could look past the backdrop.
DeleteOn the first count I agree totally. On the second I did check back and the backdrop had changed definitely for the better. So now I'll get on and see what's what.
DeleteSince this monastery won't have real monks, does that mean that the building is meant to be like a living museum type of thing, designed for tourists? Or something like that?
ReplyDeleteRemember when Lustiger gave an Indult for Midnight Mass in the Old Rite at Euro Disney? Yes, this looks like it's just a tourist attraction.
ReplyDeleteImagine how much more interesting such a project would be if there were real monks living according to the rule of the ancient Benedictines?
a lot can happen in 40 years (look at the past 40 years) who knows, may be 40 years from now there won't be any monks in Germany anyway, or conversely maybe giving this building over to a monastic order will be the most logical thing in the world, only time will tell.
ReplyDeleteIt would indeed be interesting if there were real monks there, living according to the ancient Benedictine rule. I can imagine that it's not an easy rule to live by, though I don't really know anything about it. And if it was then open to tourists, it may inspire a few of those tourists to be inclined towards religion.
