“Sneak him through without public scrutiny”

Catholic Health Association endorses backdoor appointment by President Obama, critics say it was devious move

The Catholic Health Association has once again sprung to the defense of President Barack Obama, this time over his controversial “recess appointment” yesterday of Dr. Donald Berwick as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The president made the appointment while the Senate was in recess, thereby avoiding committee hearings and Senate confirmation of Dr. Berwick, who has come under fire for past remarks about rationed health care and end-of-life treatment for the terminally ill.

Earlier this year, the Catholic Health Care Association defied American bishops by endorsing the president’s “healthcare reform” bill. The bishops had urged Congress not to approve the measure because it failed to include sufficient conscience protection provisions, left open the door for government-funded abortions, and did not include coverage for everyone.
