There's at least one reason why you'd not want to trust Cardinal Pell with such a sensitive post that don't stem from his tenuous interaction with Deacon Alcuin Reed. Isn't the fact that he tolerated such an open source of dissent in his diocese related to homosexuality cause enough? You can read the story, here.
Still, it's all too easy to see that a very unsavory cluster of individuals might not want him in this sensitive position.
