Portuguese Cardinal Criticizes Cardinal Schönborn

A Vatican Stroll for the Vienese Cardinal

If the Archbishop of Vienna didn't understand, why didn't he call? The answer: Because he was already then an opportunist.

[kreuz.net] The Portuguese Emeritus Cardinal José Saraiva Martins (78) has criticized the Vienese Natter Cardinal Christoph Schönborn.

At the end of March, Cardinal Schönborn made known to 'Österreichischen Rundfunk', that Cardinal Angelo Sodano had hindered an exploratory commission of the then Cardinal of Vienna, Hans-Hermann Groër († 2003).

The last one responsible for the events then was in any event, Pope John Paul II († 2005).

Cardinal Sodano was the Secretary of State and second in charge at the Vatican. He is the present ean of the College of Cardinals.

On the end of April Cardinal, Schönborn broke a lance also for Unnatural Love.

The public attack of the Vienese Prelate against the Dean of the College of Cardinals has caused a gigantic uproar in Italy.

Really, now the Romans have had their fill of the Defamation and Homo-Cardinal.

Today, José Cardinal Saraiva Martins commented on these attacks for the famous Italian website, 'pontifex.roma.it'.

Cardinal Martins is the former Prefect of the Congregation for Canonization.

On the question, if he were acquainted with Cardinal Schönborn's comments, he said:

"Look, everyone is free to say what he wants and must bear the responsibility for that. It isn't up to me to condemn a brother Bishop."

It was another thing entirely, to offer his own thoughts for consideration:

"I personally would have called my colleague and asked for a clarification, and offered fraternal correction and worked the things out with him.

"These problems can't be solved by the media. That is the least suitable and convincing method to go about a subject."

Otherwise one gives "our enemies" the impression of a Church, which is consumed by polemics, what allegedly "not in the least" is the case.

Cardinal Martins won't speak of his colleague in terms of "good will", but moreover, his comments have caused the Church no good service:

"In order to make the situation clear: I would not have done that and apologize for the matter."

The emeritus Cardinal alluded to the polemics surrounding the pedophilia in terms of abatement:

"Now the danger exists, that the fire will burn more intensively and widely than just an attack on a former Secretary of State and Dean of the College of Cardinals."

Cardinal Martins posted the question: "If the Archbishop of Vienna didn't understand, why didn't he call?" That is something you'd have to ask Cardinal Schönborn himself.

Indeed: "Publicly discrediting the representative of the College of Cardinals is not done."

The truth should have been spoken, "it must be formulated with love."

"I personally would not have made these comments, and I consider them to be an error."
