Contentious is one way to describe the debate surrounding the life of Pope Pius XII. Critics claim he did not do enough to save Jews during World War II. And recently, a group of Catholic scholars sent a letter to Pope Benedict – asking him to “slow down” the process for Pius’s canonization.
Support for Pope Pius XII – 3/16/10 : Currents

I applaud the recent letter a few scholars and religious figures sent to Pope Benedict. These people are experts on the subject and are familiar with the information available. Pope Benedict should heed their advice and delay the canonization process to avoid a backlash to the church. There is no rush. If the Vatican Secret Archives or other sources show the role of Pope Pius XII to have been different and scholarly scrutiny shows him to have indeed bestowed heaps of Christian caritas on the hounded Jews, then I believe the entire world would join the Catholic Church in celebrating Saint Pius.

Thanks Mr. Wilenski, for presenting your book. It may go far, like previous efforts towards persuading people of the trut of the Catholic Church. I realize that is probably not your intention, but that's definitely where we're going with this.
Cromwell's own book on Pius XII was actually a great argument for the essential goodness of Pacelli in that it is indeed a schmear campaign on the part of somebody to attack Pius XII. It's suprising how poorly reasoned and dishonest the book was, but that didn't prevent it from selling well.
More people should know that the celebrated play the Deputy was part of a KGB programme to portray Pius XII as a villain and close to the Nazis. We can't say what powers and principalities are behind the current attack on Benedict XVI and his predecessor since the KGB has changed its name, but we suspect that the same kinds of people are behind it, let's just call them Reds.
